Do You Know This New One: Raidundant

In ruggedized 3U (17.8-inch depth) box with removable RAID and connector

Non-VC backed storage start-up Raidundant LLC was founded this year in Los Angeles, CA by Alvi Hancerli and Murat Karslioglu with a patented proprietary technology for the design of SkySAN (Raidundant’s Sky Technology) that "alleviates the pain of data migration and backup speeds without having to purchase expensive network bandwidth and also offers options for secure offsite storage of physical disks."

Company’s CTO Murat Karslioglu has developed and patented several IT innovations, authored over 20 publications and earned his MBA from Istanbul Technical University with a BS is industrial engineering.

Managing Partner Alvi Hancerli is an entrepreneur and business manager of several organizations in multiple industries. He earned his BA from Emerson College in marketing and advertising.

Announced a at VMworld 2011, SkySAN is based on an unified and transportable 3U SAN, only 17.8-inch in depth, containing a RAID, named X-Array that is entirely removable and is packed by 24 2.5- or 12 3.5-inch SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs with data encryption in RAID-0, -5, -6 and -10 levels. On the rear, there is a small interchangeable module that allows users to remove, upgrade and replace the connection types for iSCSI, FC, SAS, FcoE and JBOD. Both removable units allow to stay consistent with currently and forthcoming technologies and to expand as needed.

SkySAN supports iSCSI, FC, NFS/CICS and SAS/DAS/JBOD for unlimited storage with external bays, "over a zetabyte tested", stated the Californian company. The system is managed by SkySAN Command with unlimited snapshots and clones, block and file replication, inline de-dupe and thin provisioning. The software runs on Windows NT, 2000, Solaris, Linux, AIX and HP-UX.

Other interesting features are:

  • Inherent Virtualization: automatically discover all ESX servers and VMs (support of ESX, XenServer, Hyper-V)
  • Hybrid Storage Pooling: uses SSDs that recognize and cache commonly used data to increase IO/s
  • Multi Vendor I/O Pooling: users can group together existing storage for one simple source of storage management.

The SkySAN, powered by two Intel 6 Cores Xeon E5645 processors, includes eventually clustered active-active controller for automatic backup and protection and redundant hot-swappable power supplies.

Raidundant intends to sell through the channel its products for remote/offsite storage, replication, emergency storage retrieval, mission critical military vehicles and video file transfers.
