SOS Online Backup Getting $3 Million in Series A

Bringing total funding to $10 million

SOS Online Backup, in cloud-based online backup and data protection, announced its Series A funding round from Splashpond Investors for $3 million.

This brings its total funding since launch in 2006 to $10 million combined with investments from its founders and private angel investors.

SOS Online Backup has acquired more than 500,000 total users to date.

Stacked up against chief competitor Carbonite, with more than $100 million in capital raised, SOS’s cost per user acquisition equates to roughly $14 per user – less than a quarter of the amount spent by Carbonite to acquire a single customer. These estimates are based on public information about Carbonite’s funding and its known user base of roughly 1 million active customers.

"SOS Online Backup strives to be capital-efficient and provide the best possible user experience while investing as much of our funding as possible into developing the industry’s leading technology for data backup to the cloud," said Ken Shaw, CEO and Founder of SOS Online Backup. "We are very excited for the next phase of growth fueled by this round of investment, and to bring Dan Gregerson’s talent & experience onto our Board. We continue to demonstrate that as a smaller but more efficient entity in the online backup space, we can truly accomplish more for less than some of our larger competitors."

"Splashpond is pleased to play a role in the continued growth and evolution of SOS Online Backup," said Dan Gregerson, President of Splashpond. "SOS will extend our view of cloud-based online backup solutions in the coming months, and we’re confident that customers and industry experts will be delighted with the results."

Utilizing these new funds, SOS Online Backup plans to unveil new product offerings and  cloud-based backup solutions for a variety of devices and platforms throughout late 2011.
