Backend storage for digital multi-media evidence
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on May 20, 2011 at 3:07 pmHie Electronics, Inc.‘ sales team initiated a discussion with Memphis Police Department Deputy Chief Jim Harvey at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference in 2009.
At the time, the Department had no backend storage for its growing files of digital multi-media evidence and was often challenged to find digital evidence in a timely manner for court cases. The Department needed a system for digital asset management with long-term and large-scale storage for property and evidence videos. With the TeraStack Solution now installed, the Memphis Police Department can now manage and store critical daily video & data backup from multiple sources.
Memphis handled 940,586 calls in 2009. The Memphis Police Department prides is staffed with officers who are innovative, highly trained, technically proficient, and culturally sensitive.
Several technical innovations have been recently introduced by Larry A. Godwin, Director of Police, including license plate readers mounted atop patrol cars on pan and tilt units, which automatically scan and run nearby plates. ‘Sky Cop’ Mobile Surveillance Units; highly visible, portable cameras mounted atop elevated platforms; are used for policing of designated ‘hot spots.’ Also, officers have begun documenting certain evidence electronically on PDAs.
These innovations, used in conjunction with Blue CRUSH data-driven software developed by the Memphis Police Department in partnership with the University of Memphis Center of Criminology and Research, are a new way to address the old problem of crime.
A regional interoperable data sharing point, the Real Time Crime Center, was opened in April 2008 to manage training, data sharing, and video surveillance and Blue CRUSH crime analytics. For the Memphis Police Department, the TeraStack Solution can now integrate critical daily video & data backup from multiple sources.
With the sale to the Memphis Police Department, Hie Electronics’ optical data storage system, the TeraStack Solution, enters the public safety sector; providing data backup archiving for an intense profusion of data to enhance the Department’s technologically advanced effort to fight crime.
