HP Answers:” In No Way Discontinuing Hitachi XP”

"We insist that you correct this piece immediately."

Following our yesterday’s article HP Will Stop XP (From Hitachi), Replaced by 3par, HP reacts promptly with this email from Tom Joyce, VP marketing, strategy and operations, HP Storage:

"As we discussed by phone today, we are most disappointed by your article published in StorageNewsletter on May 2, 2011 regarding HP’s relationship with Hitachi. The article is factually incorrect in many respects. We believe this is the case because StorageNewsletter did not follow the standard journalistic practice of requesting comment from HP Storage on this rumor-filled story.

"We insist that you correct this piece immediately based on the following points:

  1. "First and foremost, HP is in no way discontinuing the XP business relationship with Hitachi, Ltd. of Japan. The XP, and its newly named P9500 successor, are very successful mission-critical storage products for HP.
  2. "HP has no relationship with HDS. HP is not an OEM of HDS and never has been. HP has both an OEM relationship and an Engineering Partnership with Hitachi Ltd. of Japan. The HP Hitachi relationship has been in place for a long period of time and is continuing.
  3. "HP’s P9500 system connects with the zOS operating system. We indeed have multiple customers using the XP and the P9500 with zOS. Your statement that HP is not involved with the IBM zEnterprise market is simply incorrect.

"You state that "
AMS are not anymore resold by HP." HP has never sold the AMS line from HDS or Hitachi.

"We respectfully insist that you print a retraction and correction immediately."

Notes of StorageNewsletter.com's Editor:

About one hour after the publication on the web, we did a correction:" In fact HP receives XPs directly from Hitachi Ltd., not through HDS. But they come from the same factories."

Sorry for the mistake concerning AMS.

When we got Tom Joyce on the phone, we took advantage to ask him few questions:

  • Can you guarantee that HP will continue to offer and to sell XP until the end of the year? "Absolutely," he answered.
  • When the contract with Hitachi is ending? He didn't want to answer.
  • Can you confirm the forthcoming announcement of a new EVA? He didn't want to answer.
  • Can you confirm a coming next generation of 3par Utility Storage (with around 1,900 HDDs or more than 1PB, as written)? He didn't want to answer.

Maybe we are wrong concerning the end of XP/P9500 in HP's portfolio. We'll see.

But we are pretty sure about the arrival of new 3par and EVA units, but not about a new generation of high-end Hitachi's storage systems.

In any case, HP will have better to push its own 3par products with better margin than for those manufactured by Hitachi, at least to realize a faster return on the high investment into 3par.
