Gluster Virtual Storage Appliances Now Support Multi-Hypervisor

KVM and Xen

Gluster announced Gluster Virtual Storage Appliances will now support KVM and Xen.

Gluster Virtual Storage Appliances are designed for public and private cloud and virtual machine (VM) environments. The appliances give enterprises the ability to treat physical storage as a virtualized, standardized, and scale-on-demand pool in much the same way that they treat computing resources today, improving storage economics in the process.

With multi-hypervisor support, the Virtual Storage Appliance integrates GlusterFS into a virtual machine for deployment on any hypervisor or cloud platform.

"The popularity and rapid growth of the KVM and Xen communities over the years has been remarkable. In our discussions with our community and key partners, we recognized the crucial need KVM and Xen users have for scale-out cloud storage like our GlusterFS offering," said AB Periasamy, co-founder and CTO of Gluster. "We are excited to announce this next step in our product roadmap and look forward to the opportunities it will provide. Many of our customers are already planning to extend the benefits they achieve with Gluster into a KVM or Xen environment."

The Gluster Virtual Storage Appliances are:

  • Tailored for cloud and VM environments: The software-only appliances are decoupled from hardware and virtualize the underlying disk and memory resources in a unified global namespace, allowing for limitless scalability. With this feature, enterprises are able to deploy storage similar to virtual machines and eliminate the need for expensive physical monolithic storage systems.
  • Easy to deploy and scale: By scaling performance and capacity linearly, storage capacity is able to be added as required in only a few minutes without affecting performance.
  • Supportive of multiple hypervisors and workloads: This capability delivers performance across a range of application workloads, including those found in highly virtualized environments.

Gluster Virtual Storage Appliances supporting KVM, VMware and Xen are now available.
