OpenTech Systems Adds Local Dataset Recovery

To DASD backup and recovery solution

OpenTech Systems, Inc., provider of z/OS tape data migration software and services, tape-based data center relocation/consolidation software and services and tape-based disaster recovery software, announced the addition of several dataset recovery features to its DASD Backup Supervisor (DBS) product.

The newly released version of DBS supports the recovery of one or more individual datasets from DFDSS (logical or physical) or FDR full volume backups including VSAM datasets.

According to Don Bolton, Director of Technical Services, "The local dataset recovery feature fully automates the time-consuming and tedious process of locating and restoring individual datasets. DBS provides an ISPF panel which allows Storage Administrators to select from a list of datasets and automatically create the JCL to restore the dataset. Storage Administrators can easily customize the JCL, if they so choose, by selecting from various options such as Rename and Catalog."

Bolton also said: "DBS provides a unique user-invoked standalone ISPF panel which allows users such as application programmers to recover their own datasets, like Storage Administrators users can customize JCL by selecting from various options such as Rename and Catalog. The user-invoked local dataset recovery feature promises to be a tremendous productivity improvement because application programmers and other IT professionals can now recover one or more datasets without waiting for their Help Desk or Storage Admin personnel. Help Desk personnel and Storage Administrators can also be more productive simply because they will receive fewer dataset recovery requests."

OpenTech Systems also added support for FDRABR full volume and incremental backups to DBS for users preferring to use FDRABR as their primary backup software. FDRABR users can now take advantage of the range of DBS’ DASD backup and recovery automation features previously available only to DFDSS and FDR users.

About DBS
DASD Backup Supervisor (DBS) automates the DASD backup and recovery process by continuously auditing for new, deleted, renamed, or off-line volumes and automatically generates JOBS to back up and recover the DASD volumes. In addition, DBS simplifies the recovery of one or more individual datasets (including VSAM datasets) from DFDSS or FDR DASD backups. DBS also automates point-in-time data replication products such as FlashCopy, SnapShot and TimeFinder to ensure all necessary volumes are replicated and backed up.

The DASD volumes may be stacked on high-density tape to maximize media utilization and/or written to multiple tapes simultaneously to help achieve recovery time and recovery point objectives. DBS will make automatic adjustments to the recovery JOBS to accommodate unexpected equipment and configuration changes at the recovery site thereby, reducing recovery time, manpower requirements and DR test costs.
