Whamcloud Contracts With Oak Ridge National Laboratory

It includes 14PB of Lustre storage.

Whamcloud, a venture-backed company formed from HPC storage industry veterans, announced a contract signing with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a leading HPC installation. Technical activities spelled out under the contract aim to support the Scalable File System Center (SFSC) and include engineering efforts to enhance petascale systems.

The SFSC at ORNL ensures the continued availability of a scalable, high-performance, and reliable parallel file system environment on Leadership class machines at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF). Recognizing the challenge of deploying large-scale parallel I/O environments on petascale platforms the SFSC provides the expertise to continue to scale parallel file systems such as Lustre for current and next generation systems at the OLCF.

The SFSC deployment includes 27,000 Lustre clients and over 14PB of Lustre storage.

"We are excited to work with Whamcloud and their Lustre engineering experts to extend performance, stability, and resiliency of Lustre on Linux. Meeting the I/O requirements at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility requires continuous improvements in these three key areas," said Galen Shipman, Technical Integration Group Lead for ORNL. "In addition, this agreement will enhance the capabilities of the Scalable File Systems Center at ORNL through Whamcloud’s onsite Lustre engineering expertise."

"Oak Ridge is a key player in the future of Lustre. This agreement allows us to extend Lustre capabilities in several core areas, immediately benefiting the Lustre community," said Brent Gorda, CEO of Whamcloud. "Our team is excited to collaborate with ORNL."

All development covered under the agreement will be open-sourced and developed to advance Linux-based Lustre.
