Edimax Releases 1- and 2-Bay NAS Platforms
Based on Cavium Networks Econa processors
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on January 10, 2011 at 3:04 pmCavium Networks announced that Taiwan-based EDIMAX Technology Co., Ltd., manufacturer of network communication products, has released new networked Storage platforms targeting the consumer and SMB markets based on Cavium’s ECONA Multi-core ARM11 MPCore System-On-Chips (SOCs).
These storage products support both wired and wireless connectivity and include scalable 1-, 2- and 4-bay platforms. Besides deploying solutions under their own brand, EDIMAX Technology also develops products for many of NAS vendors as their Original Design Manufacturer (ODM).
With the on-going data explosion within broadband connected home showing no signs of slowing down, the need for a networked Storage device that can support high speed access to media-rich applications such as high definition video, high resolution photos and high fidelity audio while meeting price-sensitive consumer price points. In addition, these next generation Storage devices should also adhere to the low-profile, non-obtrusive form factor that CE devices are expected to deliver. These requirements mandate a processing solution that provides a combination of high processing capacity, security and scalability, hardware acceleration and low power consumption. Cavium’s ECONA processors provide performance per dollar and performance per watt, with multi-gigabit NAS performance under 2W. With Cavium Networks’ ECONA CNS3XXX SoC, EDIMAX Technology has developed and deployed their next generation Storage platform for the broadband-connected digital home.
Edimax Technology’s NAS Storage server comes in a 1-bay (NS-2511) and a 2-bay (NS-2512) version for different environments.
The NS-2511 and the NS-2512 are storage solutions with high-speed networking capabilities. The NS-2511 features one disk drawer to enclose a 3.5″ SATA HDD and the NS-2512 provides space for two 3.5″ SATA HDD’s with maximum capacity of 2 TB per bay.
The NS-2511 and NS2512 function as flexible and complete media servers. A built-in iTunes Music server allows users to connect an iPod to share and play media files. In addition, the DLNA and UPnP server allows users to share media files with UPnP and DLNA compliant media adapters or players within the network. Both NAS servers support FTP/HTTP and BitTorrent (P2P) downloading features, enabling an uninterrupted download, even when the computer is powered off.
“We are excited to introduce to the market innovative and leading-edge products that drive the deployment of next generation networked Storage platforms that support the myriad applications and connected devices being deployed in the SoHo and consumer markets,” said Peter L. J. Pan, VP at EDIMAX Technology. “Cavium’s multi-core ECONA platforms delivered superior scalability, performance, features and low power that were essential to implement the revolutionary feature set across all our networked Storage platforms“.
“EDIMAX Technology is a pioneer in developing next-generation networked Storage technologies for the consumer and SMB segments world-wide. We are pleased to collaborate with EDIMAX Technology in its deployment of a world-class, comprehensive portfolio of networked Storage products,” said Manoj Gujral, VP and GM of Broadband and Consumer Division at Cavium Networks. “We look forward to continuing our strong partnership in launching more products and advanced technology to support the increasingly media-centric applications in the digital home.“
