Delsea Regional School District and PBG Networks Collaborated

On implementing virtual SAN

In hard economic times, enterprise departments, including IT, must find and exploit new and innovative methods for maximizing their utilization of scarce resources, especially storage.

In that spirit, Greg Taylor, Technology Coordinator of the Delsea Regional School District in New Jersey, turned to PBG Networks, an IT systems integrator specializing in education solutions.

Through a collaborative process, Delsea and PBG Networks realized the advantages of implementing a virtual storage area network (vSAN) at Delsea schools. A vSAN, which is essentially a network of virtual storage devices, offers a number of financial and technological advantages over a conventional hardware-based SAN.

A vSAN:

  • Improves storage utilization while maintaining a high level of performance.
  • Reduces capital expenditures.
  • Eliminates hardware maintenance and depreciation costs.
  • Removes hardware-related single points of failure.
  • Enables the expansion of storage pools through non-disruptive software upgrades.
  • Improves the overall reliability, availability, and serviceability of IT infrastructure.

To establish the school district’s vSAN, Delsea and PBG Networks selected the SvSAN solution from StorMagic.

SvSAN was chosen because:

  • The software is compatible with VMware’s popular vCenter offering; and, more impressively,
  • The product helps recover previously inaccessible storage space, up to two (2) terabytes depending on the existing storage configuration.

According to Greg Taylor, "SvSAN has provided the storage stability and reliability that Delsea needs to properly service the school community. Not only has SvSAN expanded our storage pool, but provided for easier data replication, thereby improving our recovery posture."

In terms of PBG Network’s contribution, Mr. Taylor exclaimed that "PBG did great. The implementation of SvSAN proceeded with no impact to Delsea’s regular operations."
