Emulex in Host-Based Encryption Solution …

For data in-flight and at-rest

Emulex Corporation announced the introduction of an host-based encryption solution that provides security for data in-flight and at-rest.

The solution consists of OneCommand Guardian, Emulex’s new software security product and OneCommand Key Manager, an enterprise-class, Key management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) compliant key manager based on IBM Tivoli Key Lifecycle Manager technology, which can be deployed on servers using Emulex’s OneSecure adapters, or Emulex’s family of LightPulse 8Gb/s Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBAs).

"With this solution, Emulex is breaking down the cost and complexity barriers that have prevented or delayed security conscious companies from protecting their customers’ data with encryption," said Steve Daheb, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of business development, Emulex. "Together with its partners, Emulex is delivering a host-based encryption solution that is less expensive, non-disruptive and more secure than other encryption solutions available in the market today."

Emulex’s security solution improves the data center’s security stance and minimizes the window of data vulnerability by securing data where it originates, at the host, as described in SNIA’s Best Current Practices. The Emulex solution allows companies to easily meet their compliance requirements for data protection rules and regulations, such as HiTECH Act, PCI-DSS, European Union Data Protection Directive, Security Breach Disclosure, HIPAA, GLBA, Germany’s Federal Data Protection Act, BASEL II, the UK Data Protection Act and various DoD and NSA mandates. With Emulex OneCommand Guardian and OneCommand Key Manager, customers are now able to implement an encryption solution that is cost effective.

When compared to other solutions on the market today, Emulex’s security solution is:

  • 30% less expensive than disk shredding
  • 50% less expensive than self encrypting drives
  • 70% less expensive than encryption switches
  • 50% less expensive than database encryption

Leveraging IBM Tivoli Key Lifecycle Manager technology, Emulex’s OneCommand Key Manger provides efficient management of encryption key life cycle throughout the enterprise by centralizing and simplifying the encryption key management process.

"Through its latest key management solution, IBM is helping customers reduce costs and lower risk by building encryption into all the components of their IT infrastructures," said Gordon Arnold, product manager, IBM Security Solutions. "Based on its support for the new OASIS standard KMIP, servers, storage and even network appliances can now be designed with data security and encryption in mind. As a result, IBM’s partnership with Emulex is helping customers more easily secure their cloud and virtualized environments."

In addition, Emulex’s security solution allows for non-disruptive phased deployment, with eLUN migration and replication support, improved performance using Emulex OneSecure adapters that offload encryption processing from the server, and targeted encryption of only the data of specific applications that you need to encrypt.

"Enabling enterprises to add new technologies and capabilities without disruption or downtime is core to the Compellent value proposition," said Bob Fine, director of product marketing, Compellent. "We are pleased to work closely with Emulex to bring a comprehensive host-based encryption solution to market that delivers on these same promises for data center security. Our open, agile, fluid architecture is the perfect complement to the new Emulex encryption solution and together we are helping enterprises easily make the transition to fully encrypted infrastructures."

"Virtually every business is faced with the challenge of securing their data, but most businesses have deemed traditional security offerings too expensive and complex to implement," said Hu Yoshida, chief technology officer and vice president, Hitachi Data Systems. "Hitachi Data Systems partners with Emulex to offer this host-based encryption solution as a complement to our controller-based encryption directors that are available on our Hitachi Universal Storage Platform® V (USP V) and our recently announced Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP). Our customers have a choice of encrypting their data per host or by multiple hosts on a controller without the added cost and complexity of other solutions in the market today."

"FalconStor Software leads the way in developing innovative, scalable data protection and network storage solutions designed to optimize the storage, protection, efficiency and availability of enterprise data and applications," said Fadi Albatal, vice president of marketing, FalconStor Software. "By leveraging the Emulex OneCommand Guardian host-based encryption solution, we are able to deliver enterprise-class data protection to our common customers for cutting-edge data center architectures – including service-oriented utility storage and data protection."

"There are numerous and growing security mandates driving the business need for encryption, particularly in the financial services, federal government, healthcare, retail and enterprise markets," said Jon Oltsik, senior principal analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "What Emulex brings to the table is a comprehensive, standardized encryption option with best in class key management that minimizes the requirement for compensating controls, allows customers to start small and grow, and lowers the overall cost for companies to become compliant."

"IDC’s research shows that security administrators prefer encryption solutions that encrypt data close to where it’s created. This offers greater control over the protection of the data and has compliance advantages," said Charles Kolodgy is a research vice president for IDC’s Security Products service. "Emulex’s host-based encryption solution addresses this need by encrypting data at the server where it’s created, providing more granular control, greater protection and flexible key management."

Emulex 8Gb/s Fibre Channel LightPulse HBAs, OneSecure adapters and OneConnect iSCSI, FCoE and Ethernet adapters leverage the same reliable architecture, common driver platform and time-saving, streamlined OneCommand Manager application providing data center administrators with management and deployment for all Emulex adapters in their environment.
