Infortrend EonStor DS: 6Gb SAS-to-SAS Storage Subsystems

Infortrend launched a series of 6Gb/s SAS end-to-end storage systems in its EonStor DS family, which offer a 50 percent performance improvement for audio/video DAS (Direct-Attached Storage) applications when compared to Infortrend’s 3Gb/s SAS systems.

This increase in performance can generate business advantages for media companies, including optimized content editing and simultaneous broadcast or playback of different HD (High Definition) content. Surveillance companies benefit from the systems’ superior performance with the ability to support for more cameras in their surveillance networks while maintaining smooth data streaming.

Often, media companies feature large editing departments, with many workstations needing to access and edit content at the same time. The emergence of digital content has given impetus to non-linear editing, allowing users to access any part of a digital content file in any sequence. Furthermore, with HD content on the rise, demands for bandwidth and capacity have increased. To meet the needs of today’s media editing operations, storage systems need to provide high throughput. Infortrend’s EonStor DS 6Gb/s SAS end-to-end storage systems can deliver up to 2,500 MB/s read performance and 1,100 MB/s write performance, and can therefore offer the required support for complex editing operations.

The aforementioned performance levels of the EonStor DS 6Gb/s SAS storage systems also allow media companies to simultaneously broadcast or playback different HD content. Many media companies have different channels on which they need to broadcast content at the same time. The bandwidth increase of the storage systems allows them to do this without any problems.

When surveillance companies expand their networks, their storage systems have to be able to support this expansion in terms of both storage capacity and performance. The flexible disk drive support of the storage systems enables surveillance companies to store up to 224TB of surveillance data.
