600 Media and Broadcast Companies Use Isilon

To simplify content management for media production workflows

Isilion Systems, Inc. says that ABC, Clear Channel, CTV, Dailymotion, Lightstorm Entertainment, NBC Universal, Orange, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Travel Channel and Turner Studios are among media and broadcast companies using Isilon scale-out storage to simplify content management for media production workflows, reducing costs and accelerating time-to-market.

Isilon scale-out storage, featuring the OneFS operating system, consolidates media assets and enables concurrent access to any type of digital content, all from a single file system, improving application performance for data-intensive media and broadcast operations. With Isilon, customers can scale a single, shared storage resource in-line with business growth, minimizing capital costs, while ensuring content is available and secure 24x7x365.

Media and Broadcast Customers Succeed with Isilon
CTV deployed Isilon to power its broadcast of the 2010 Winter Games, simplifying content and storage management for hundreds of hours of Olympic broadcast coverage. "For us, the real story is what we have been able to accomplish with Isilon. Compared to our old SAN system with data duplication, it has been a massive shift to fast, single copy, multiple host access," said Michael Kozlakowski, senior manager, media technology systems, CTV. "We needed a storage system that could provide highly concurrent content access to our users without sacrificing performance or ease of use. Isilon delivered."

James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment used Isilon to unify manage and access vast stores of unique, extremely high resolution 3D content as part the production of Avatar, the highest-grossing movie of all time. "Our unique and highly demanding workflow created terabytes of data on a weekly and even daily basis, necessitating a storage solution with the scalability and high performance to efficiently manage our data and accelerate production," said Jon Landau, producer at Lightstorm Entertainment. "Isilon is so hands off, we simply turned it on and went to work."

NBC Universal, a media and entertainment company, is using Isilon scale-out storage to archive and access growing stores of media programming, including entertainment TV and production, movies, news and sports. "The shift to multiple distribution channels, formats, and consumption models has resulted in massive increases in the amount and importance of archived media," said David Evans, director of storage solutions, global operations, NBC Universal. "Isilon is uniquely architected to address the business needs of NBC Universal, enabling us to transform our digital media assets into high-quality programming."

Travel Channel
deployed Isilon to unify content from more than 30,000 tapes onto a single, shared storage resource, streamlining data access to reduce its production workload by 30 percent. "We selected the Isilon solution instead of a SAN as it provided us with several clear advantages in terms of compatibility, performance and reliability," said Matt Westrup, head of operations, Travel Channel. "The solution requires minimal management and our data is always 100 percent available."

"Media and broadcast companies are constantly looking for ways to increase the business value of their media assets by merging creative talent with leading-edge technology," said Sam Grocott, vice president of marketing, Isilon. "By leveraging Isilon to simplify content management, improve productivity and capitalize on new opportunities, today’s media and broadcast companies can ensure they maximize the value of their media assets in driving new business opportunities."
