SQL Storage Compress 5.0 From Red Gate

Red Gate Software Ltd. has launched SQL Storage Compress 5.0 (formerly HyperBac Online), a release that reduces the storage footprint of live SQL Server databases, improves I/O performance, and works across all SQL Server and operating system versions.

Functionality and improvements
in SQL Storage Compress 5.0 include:

• Silent data compression – SQL Storage Compress integrates seamlessly with SQL Server to compress databases by up to 90 percent.
• Ability to run compressed, live databases from newly created or restored databases, including from full, differential and transaction log backups created with native SQL Server, SQL HyperBac, SQL Backup Pro, and other third-party backup products.
• New engine performance improvements of up to 25 percent.
• New support documentation from Red Gate’s acclaimed team.

Qian Ye, a senior database administrator for the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH), likes the fact that SQL Storage Compress is implemented on an entire database, datafile or filegroup, removing the need for developers to define compression on an object-by-object basis.
