USA.NET’s rapid business growth required a move to a more efficient and flexible virtual environment that could ingest, parse, index and archive hundreds of millions of small files. Leveraging Isilon’s X-Series powered by the OneFS operating system, USA.NET’s Archival Services group consolidated its VMware-based servers and file-based storage onto a single file system, simplifying both data and virtual server management. By using Isilon to eliminate the data fragmentation and complex LUN management common with traditional SAN systems in virtual environments, USA.NET has improved resource utilization and reduced costs throughout its IT infrastructure.

"As our business grew, we virtualized our production environment to increase our flexibility and reduce costs," said Justin Greene, VP Archival Services, USA.NET. "Virtualization and rapid growth would have created a LUN management nightmare for our SAN system, which would hinder our ability to keep pace with customer demand. By virtualizing on Isilon, we’ve eliminated LUNs altogether and now management is simple, utilization is up, and we’re better positioned to add capacity on demand to move our business forward."

USA.NET is a wholly owned subsidiary of Perimeter E-Security, in information security services. Working with Isilon integrator FusionStorm, USA.NET deployed Isilon scale-out storage to consolidate all of its file-based applications onto a single, shared pool of storage, enabling seamless data movement throughout its production environment and providing a highly reliable repository for all USA.NET Archival Services’ client data. By combining Isilon with VMware, USA.NET has been able to move to diskless blade servers that delivered significant power, cooling and floor space savings for its business. These changes allowed USA.NET to improve both storage and server utilization and simplify storage management to less than a single full-time employee (FTE).

"USA.NET is making it easy for enterprise businesses of all types to manage their e-messages and meet compliance standards," said Sam Grocott, vice president of marketing, Isilon. "By using Isilon scale-out storage solutions to simplify its virtual server environment, USA.NET is demonstrating that storage for virtualization can be easy, too."
