PST Manager From C2C Controls Runaway PSTs

Enabling migration and archive of PST files

C2C announced PST Manager, a product that makes it possible to find, analyze, migrate and/or eliminate troublesome email PST files throughout a network.

Creating PST files to offload email and contain capacity growth leads to several challenges when companies must meet legal requirements or internal policies for the use, retention and discovery of email. PST files are scattered throughout networks on servers and PCs, and their contents cannot be searched centrally using traditional methods, making it difficult for IT managers to readily identify what could be putting them at risk. PST Manager finds PSTs on network servers and on client desktops or laptops, discovers lost and unassociated PSTs, and can help migrate PSTs directly into Exchange. PST Manager gives Microsoft Exchange Server administrators the ability to understand the size and content of each PST by providing a summary report of the size, nature and scope of the PST problem and recommendations for further actions.

IT departments increasingly frown on PSTs and often look to eliminate them. They often contain critical data, yet are rarely backed up or managed. After implementing mailbox quotas to control email storage growth, users frequently create PST files as a way around mailbox size restrictions. Outlook’s AutoArchive feature can create PSTs automatically, often without the user’s knowledge. Excessive amounts of IT resources can be spent locating and recovering PSTs for users or recovering needed data from PSTs.

"PSTs are seen as a ‘necessary evil’ for self-managing email to stay within quotas, but IT managers understand the complexity of migrating them back into Exchange or to an archive," said Dave Hunt, CEO at C2C. "PST Manager makes it simple and efficient for organizations to mitigate the PST problems and achieve control over all email data, including that in PSTs."

"PST growth across the network caused us significant problems, from discovery to backup," said Russell Brown, Head of IT for Essex Court Chambers, a UK law firm. "We implemented ArchiveOne partly as a transition aid to migrate to Exchange 2010, and it helped us eliminate PSTs. It has been hugely beneficial."

PST Manager, part of the ArchiveOne archiving family, can be used as a stand-alone product or integrated with ArchiveOne. PST Manager is available in two editions. The full version, PST Manager Professional, is a complete PST discovery, analysis and migration tool that enables PSTs to be managed with policy-driven automation. PST Manager Lite is available for free and helps Exchange administrators understand the scope of their PST problem and recommends a course of action.

C2C’s ArchiveOne solutions are simple yet sophisticated tools that are field-proven to help organizations with archiving, retention and eDiscovery of email and files, compliance management, intellectual property containment and storage management tools. ArchiveOne employs Zero-Training User Design and is completely transparent, installing in about one hour. ArchiveOne for email provides secure access to archived emails through iPhone or BlackBerry devices and offsite workers. Sophisticated features include the ability to search and take action on data before it is committed to archive, which provides assurance against ‘data fingerprints,’ reduces capacity needs, speeds backups, and optimizes TCO. Advanced PST management allows administrators to discover, search, delete or consolidate PST files across the organization and integrated Bates Stamping to streamline eDiscovery process. ArchiveOne is not dependent on SQL databases, so it offers best-in-class flexibility and scalability as well as reducing risk and improving system usage.
