Isilon Chosen by Navteq

To help support its database of digital location content

Isilon Systems, Inc. announced that NAVTEQ, a provider of maps, traffic and location data, has deployed multiple tiers of Isilon scale-out storage to help support its database of digital location content. Working with data center solutions provider and Isilon partner Datalink, NAVTEQ has deployed the Isilon IQ X-Series and NL-Series across multiple international data centers to aggregate content, software development and other file-based applications onto a single, shared storage resource, increasing data availability and workflow productivity. Using Isilon scale-out storage, featuring its OneFS operating system, NAVTEQ can support a wide range of applications simultaneously from a single file system, simplifying management and improving data access, while reducing storage costs and complexity.

NAVTEQ supplies comprehensive digital location content to power automotive navigation systems, portable and wireless devices, Internet-based mapping applications and government and business solutions. Working with Datalink, NAVTEQ has deployed multiple tiers of Isilon scale-out storage across its production workflows. Using the Isilon X-Series, NAVTEQ created a single, easily expandable, shared storage resource for its software development applications, enabling its engineers to access data concurrently and collaborate more effectively. By combining Isilon’s Backup Accelerator with the X-Series cluster, NAVTEQ can backup its data to tape without impacting the front-end performance of its production applications, simultaneously reducing the risk of data loss, while improving workflow productivity.

"NAVTEQ’s collection of geospatial information and intellectual property is critical to its operations, so this data needs to flow through NAVTEQ’s IT infrastructure in a way that maximizes its value and minimizes associated costs," said Shawn O’Grady, executive vice president of strategy and operations, Datalink. "By delivering a multi-tiered, integrated storage solution with Isilon scale-out storage, we’ve provided NAVTEQ with the ability to do just that."

To centralize its massive repository of raw and production-ready data, NAVTEQ worked with Datalink to deploy the Isilon IQ NL-Series, unifying it onto a single, easy-to-use, pool of storage to streamline access and speed this content through its production pipeline. Using Isilon’s SyncIQ data replication software, NAVTEQ can replicate its valuable repository from its primary cluster in the United States to a secondary Isilon cluster in India, ensuring its data is secure and accessible to its development teams around the world. With Isilon, NAVTEQ can support its operations and reduce the risk of data loss without significant capital or operating expense, driving increased efficiency in its IT infrastructure.

"NAVTEQ’s global, round-the-clock operations are helping set the standard for best practices in enterprise IT by leveraging leading-edge technologies to meet changing business demands," said Sam Grocott, vice president of marketing, Isilon Systems. "Isilon is pleased to partner with Datalink in helping support NAVTEQ’s data management strategy."
