UK id7 Launching VTL (£1,500) With De-Dupe and Replication

As an alternative to remote/departmental DAS

id7 Ltd., manufacturer of iSCSI, Fibre Channel and InfiniBand based storage solutions for the SMB markets, announced that to facilitate remote site and departmental office Disaster Recovery with de-duplication and replication, it has launched its RM2 disk based backup and recovery appliance.

Using RM2, multi location companies who require both localised backup and secure, fast, centralised backups with their remote offices can now do so providing de-duplicated, replicated copies over the WAN.

Current backup solutions for the multi-location company generally fall into two categories, the software approach which requires a new implementation throughout every location, or the appliance approach which, for many, is simply too expensive once you start looking at more than a few locations.” said Mark Klarzynski, CTO, id7. “With the RM2 incorporating all the technologies that a fully fledged Virtual Tape Library provides but backed with a stunning price tag, it’s a great, realistic out-of-the box alternative.”

The RM2 is a small footprint appliance with integrates with the current backup application via Ethernet. Ease of use is paramount in an environment where there is frequently not dedicated IT support on-site. Install is a doodle, taking less than 5 minutes using Ethernet connection. Once installed, the user or office administrator simply backs up to the RM2 which preserves local copies and automates replication to a central site. Once there, the backups are stored on disk in de-duplicated format with the option of creating physical copies with preserved bar codes from central to remote sites for consistent backup application catalogues. What this frequently means is that no longer do remote offices have to send tape copies off-site avoiding the risk, cost and time associated with traditional courier approach.

The RM2 is distributed by Hammer PLC and will be sold through id7’s established network of two tier partners. Cambridgeshire based EACS, an id7 premier storage partner, are one of the first partners to encompass and recommend the solution.

Mike Dearlove, MD, EACS commented: “A significant proportion of our customer base has remote offices or retail outlets in some form. The industry has been crying out for an affordable feature rich solution that offers de-duplication and replication for enhanced security and speed of backups. That has now arrived in the form of the RM2.”
