Winchester Systems Improving Speed of SAS/SATA HDD Arrays

2.5GB/s and 149,000 IO/s, according to the company

Winchester Systems Inc. announced speed improvements to FlashDisk SX-2300 and FlashDisk SX-3400 SAS/SATA disk arrays.

Both models now deliver over 2,500 MB per second data throughput for large file transfers and 149,000 I/O operations per second for transaction processing. FlashDisk SX-2300 expands to 168 TB using up to 84 disks in 2U high shelves with 12 drives each and FlashDisk SX-3400 expands to 224 TB using up to 112 disks in 3U high shelves with 16 drives each. Each FlashDisk model provides reliability and performance with a low cost per terabyte with expansion to seven shelves per RAID array. The company features high speed ASICs on the RAID controllers that speed parity and enhance overall system performance.

Both models offer single and dual redundant failover and automatic failback caching controllers for high speed, high reliability and high capacity. Single controller models provide four 8 Gb Fibre Channel host ports and redundant controller models provide eight ports. The dual controller models also provide ‘SAN-In-A-Box’ connectivity to as many as eight servers without the need for a Fibre Channel switch.

FlashDisk with SATA disks are perfect for the highest capacity applications including deep archives, security video, medical imaging, backup, snapshot, disaster recovery, virtual tape library, data acquisition, digital imaging and audio. With SAS disks, FlashDisk is ideal for database, OLTP, virtual servers and other demanding applications.

"These tiered storage solutions deliver the performance required for primary applications on the SAS shelves, capacity needed to store volumes of data to secondary SATA shelves and the affordability of doing both on a single RAID system," according to Mr. Joel Leider, the company’s chief executive officer. He added: "Our new faster ASIC parity chips are the key to the performance of these improved products."

According to the company’s white paper, High Speed RAID 6, RAID 6 dual parity offers 500 to 30,000 times longer MTDL (Mean Time To Data Loss) than RAID 5.

FlashDisk SAS/SATA models are available now and start at under $15,000. Delivery is 2-3 weeks ARO.
