SEP AG relied on an Ingres Database template within SUSE Studio from Novell to develop the automated application. Ingres and SEP AG attended Novell BrainShare EMEA in Amsterdam to talk more about the solution and how companies can leverage open source concepts to maximize profits.

The SUSE Studio Appliance Template for Ingres Database creates a single, seamless on-ramp for ISVs to integrate their applications and quickly get to market with a software appliance. This template enables ISVs to focus on their core businesses by eliminating the burden of managing the life-cycle of the operating system or the middleware database component within their appliances. A collaborative support model ensures certified appliances are supported by both companies with no additional work required by SEP AG. The result is that SEP AG was able to significantly reduce appliance setup and build times and more cost-effectively sell appliances with a fully-supported, enterprise-class database and operating system.

The city of Schwabisch Hall uses more than 40 Ingres databases for its council information system and the management of its historical collection. SEP AG built a mission-critical application to automatically back up and copy the information stored in these databases while offering additional features such as checkpoint backup and disaster recovery. SEP AG used SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 from Novell, Ingres Database, and the backup server SEP sesam 3.6 to create a complete, easy-to-install solution.

"The city of Schwabisch Hall has been a long believer in the unique advantages of open source based solutions and has already put that belief into practice. There were two decisive factors for us – the enterprise capability of the open source solutions and a professional and reliable support system," explained Horst Brauner, EDP coordinator of the city of Schwabisch Hall. "In this case, both criteria were met in full – not to mention the fact that we also benefit from the strategic alliance in the open source arena. We welcome this move by Ingres using Novell solutions, and we look forward to working with many more ISVs like SEP who provide their end customers with innovative, high-performance and cost-effective solutions."

The SUSE Studio Appliance Template for the Ingres Database is now available in SUSE Studio Online.
