Comments

actidata stated that the NAS system with RDX removable media drive is aimed "to replace expensive and slow tape backup systems". But the same recent German company also resells "expensive and slow" LTO drives and libraries ...

Following this comment, we received on May 22
the following email
from Gudmundur Einarsson, CEO of actidata:

"I think we all agree that tape solutions as backup in the SMB market are declining, especially single drives and 1U automation with small automation products and that companies are looking for other ways to solve their backup needs.

"The last argument is that customers have said who are using tape "
we need to have a copy for safe keeping".

"We believe strongly that by offering actiNAS Cube RDX we have solved that issue and are able to offer them a total storage solution with backup and also the possibility for a copy for safe keeping, all in one unit and easy to handle.

"It will replace solutions where companies are using single drives and small 1U autoloaders, our first target market is to offer complete storage solution for those customers.

"We do recognize that the complete market will not turn around tomorrow and we will see some customers still installing tape solutions and they may be individual good reasons for them to continue with that, like large amount of cartridges with information, and they may not want to convert them to new technology etc. We are convinced that they will over time need to change to other solutions, bigger capacity or new technology, we are than prepared to offer them a good long term solution.

"actidata will not offer any tape solution below LTO technology as we see this market declining fast and converting fast to disk solution, we will as you have seen offer LTO single drive and 1U as customers are asking for that but we also see a decline in that segment, and WE NEED TO RESPOND TO THOSE CHALLENGES.

"actidata will offer bigger tape automation systems 2U-12U for backup and archiving for the segment above actiNAS Cube RDX."
