One Exabyte De-Duped With NetApp, at 27% Average Rate

NetApp, Inc. announced that it is the first vendor to achieve more than an exabyte of storage with deduped storage-system deployments. With more than 87,000 deduped storage systems deployed and 12,000 customers benefiting from its storage efficiency technologies, NetApp currently leads the market in primary storage deduplication.

No other best-of-breed storage vendor can offer this level of deduped storage capacity, or our range of storage efficiency technologies, or validate such significant and sustainable savings for customers.”

While other storage vendors offer only one or two storage efficiency products, NetApp offers nine technologies: Snapshot, SnapMirror, SnapVault, FlexClone, thin provisioning, RAID-DP, deduplication, compression, SATA and Flash Cache (formerly Performance Accelerator Module). By leveraging all of the technologies within NetApp’s comprehensive portfolio, customers can achieve savings that could translate to an average return on investment of 200% within a six-month window.

More than half of the NetApp systems deployed currently use four to five storage efficiency technologies, on average. Deduplication is often the initial storage efficiency technology deployed, given its high value for virtualization, file services, server consolidation, and messaging environments. But by enabling other storage efficiency technologies, customers can increase their savings from an average of 27% to rates as high as 85-100%.

“Storage capacity continues to grow unabated while resources and budgets remain constrained,” said Laura DuBois, Program Vice President at IDC. “These factors, in addition to limited network bandwidth and power and cooling overhead, are driving more firms to deploy storage optimisation technologies such as deduplication. In fact, based on a recent IDC study, 58% of firms already using deduplication technology are deduplicating their primary data.”  IDC authored a new NetApp-sponsored white paper titled Key Considerations as Deduplication Evolves into Primary Storage.

To help customers maximise the value of their storage efficiency technologies, NetApp also offers the Storage Efficiency and Optimisation Service, a new service that estimates and aggregates efficiency savings based on an enterprise’s entire infrastructure. The Storage Efficiency and Optimisation Service helps customers measure and monitor their current storage efficiency rates and provides guidance on steps they can take to better optimise their current NetApp infrastructure.
