Mellanox 10GigE Adapters Achieved Average Latency of 4μs at 50,000 Messages/s

Using IBM WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging software

Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. announced record performance benchmarks of IBM WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging software performed on top of IBM BladeCenter HS22 and Mellanox ConnectX-2 EN 10GigE adapters with RDMA over Ethernet (RoE).

The benchmark results, indicating an enhancement in latency reduction and scaling of messaging performance, validate Mellanox’s performance leadership for high-performance connectivity to data centers in the financial services industry.

The growing trading volume and market data to be analyzed and processed for successful order execution is forcing businesses to increase infrastructure capacity and speed. According to the benchmark test results, WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging (LLM) software running over Mellanox 10GigE low-latency Ethernet technology achieved an average latency of four microseconds at 50 thousand messages per second, and six microseconds at one million messages per second – the lowest latency achieved by any messaging delivery product over Ethernet. All tests were done with message size of 100 bytes. The test results represent an improvement of more than 200 percent compared to the performance achieved when running over any other 10GigE adapter.

"Financial organizations are facing rising global competition and must develop innovative solutions to continue to drive growth and profitability," said Sujal Das, senior director of product management at Mellanox Technologies. "Every microsecond of latency directly impacts a financial services institution’s profitability and ConnectX-2 EN with RoE enables IBM to deliver a competitive advantage to its WebSphere MQ LLM end-users."

Mellanox is the first company to implement the IBTA’s RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) standard. ConnectX-2 EN with RoE utilizes the emerging lossless capabilities in Ethernet defined by IEEE DCB Workgroup, and the efficient and field-proven RDMA transport technology defined by the IBTA to ensure reliable delivery and the lowest-latency at wire-speed.
