2PB Milestone for SugarSync
For its cloud sync/backup hosting services
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 28, 2010 at 3:10 pmSugarSync, Inc., maker of SugarSync file sync, backup and file sharing service, now hosts more than two petabytes of user data.
"This significant milestone highlights the trend toward mainstream adoption of combination cloud sync/back up services," said Laura Yecies, CEO of SugarSync. "It also validates the scalability of our infrastructure and service. SugarSync’s unique mix-and-match selective sync technology offers our customers a sustained advantage, and the sophisticated architecture is proving its power as we grow."
SugarSync also released a handful of key statistics to further illustrate its growth. From March 2009 to March 2010, the amount of customer data added on a daily basis to SugarSync’s private secure data centers more than quintupled, from 1 terabyte/day to 5 terabytes/day. Average inbound traffic multiplied from 189 Mbps/day to 743 Mbps/day.
The company has also experienced impressive organic growth in key international markets. Over 33% of users are located outside of the United States, with 8% in Japan. SugarSync launched its first international apps (Chinese and Spanish) in December 2009, and Japanese and German will be available this spring.
Continued Yecies:" Our main priority is to deliver the features customers want and need most. We listen closely to sync enthusiasts as they vote in polls, and comment on blogs and forums. As a result, in the past year and a half, we’ve focused our development efforts on greatly expanding our mobile support to Android, BlackBerry and iPad, and enhancing our unique selective sync technologies. And more is on the way soon."
Just prior to the launch of SugarSync’s free plan, the interface was refreshed to make the ability to selectively sync any folder more friendly. That foundation has been expanded in the past twelve months to add or improve the top user-requested features including:
- Selective sync (ongoing enhancements)
- Watch Any Folder (ongoing enhancements)
- Android app (July ’09)
- Upload By Email (February ’10)
- Bigger, better storage plans up to 500 GB (February ’10)
- Third-Party Developer APIs for Android (November ’09) and Platform (March ’10)
- Public Links (September ’09)

- Business edition with free phone support (November ’09)
As an incentive for new customers to try all of SugarSync’s new features, the company also announced a special offer: new users can earn an extra free 1 GB of space simply by sharing on social media which feature encouraged them to download the service. SugarSync’s referral program also offers users the ability to earn up to 105 GB of free space through friends-and-family sign-ups.
