CORRECTION: Price of LTO-5 Cartridges
In the $110 range, $168.50 by HP
By Jean Jacques Maleval | April 1, 2010 at 2:55 pmWe have received this email from Joseph Stonoha from Netc, L.L.C., The Media Barcode Label Experts:
"I just finished reading the “Our Comments” section of the TDK LTO-5 article (Imation’s Brand "TDK Life on Record" Shipping LTO-5 Media). The pricing given in the sentence – ‘For example, StreetPrices.com is offering now one of them for $33.99 or $42.66 dependinq on the sources’ – is for a storage case for LTO media not the LTO cartridges. I believe LTO-5 cartridges will be initially priced in the $110USD range."
Thanks for the correction and sorry for the mistake.
On its side, HP just announced $168.50 for one LTO-5 cartridge (see today’s news HP Finally Launching LTO-5 Drive). It’s more than three times the price of LTO-4 media for twice more capacity.
For comparison, a 2.5-inch hard disk drive of 750GB or half the native capacity of an LTO-5 cartridge (1500GB) – like the unit just announced by WD – is priced $149. It can be used eventually as a removable device, like a tape cartridge, and the volume of the disk is more than three times smaller than the LTO media.
