Online Backup Free for Cox Business Internet Customers

After launch in Southern Virginia, Kansas/Arkansas, Las Vegas and San Diego

Cox Business announced that its online backup service is now available in all Cox markets nationwide. Data losses can cost companies time and money. This free service provides Cox Business Internet customers peace of mind against PC file corruption, accidental deletion or hardware failure caused by human error or unforeseen disaster.

Cox Business Online Backup automatically backs up business files to secure data centers that feature uninterrupted, year-round onsite monitoring and security; state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression systems; redundant power distribution units and seismic safeguards designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake.

The service initially launched in Southern Virginia in December 2009 and was recently extended to Kansas/Arkansas, Las Vegas and San Diego as a ramp up to today’s full deployment.

Cox Business is teaming with Mozy, a service from EMC Corporation, to provide business-class, secure, online backup capabilities at no additional charge to Cox Business Internet subscribers. Businesses will receive between 2 GB and 10 GB of online backup storage space, based on their speed of Internet service and can purchase additional capacity if needed.

"Cox Business Online Backup is an added value to meet our customers’ needs and is a compelling alternative to external hard drives and stacks of CDs cluttering the desktop," said Kristine Faulkner, vice president, product development and management, Cox Business. "Cox Business is taking another important step in combining business-class broadband speed and solutions."

Cox Business Online Backup automatically saves duplicate copies of files based on users’ preferences of hourly, daily, monthly and/or manual intervals. The new feature also allows businesses to view and download their files from any location with PC and Internet access.  Online Backup includes 448-bit Blowfish local file encryption and copies are moved to the online backup servers using 128-bit SSL encryption, the industry standard for safe and secure data transfer. The product also includes functionality that allows administrators to manage multiple computers.

"According to IDC research, about two thirds of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) either currently use or plan to use online backup services – and online storage is the No. 1 area where these businesses indicate they will increase investment over the next two years," said Matt Davis, director of consumer and SMB telecom services, IDC. "Cox is offering this service as a value added feature on its already competitive high-speed business Internet products, a combination we believe these companies will find extremely attractive."

To activate Cox Business Online Backup, Cox Business Internet customers login to MyAccount, the Cox Business account management portal, to download software and select backup files and frequency preferences. Cox Business Online Backup also is available a la carte for businesses that are currently Cox Business customers.

Cox Business provides voice, data and video services for nearly 250,000 small and regional businesses, including healthcare providers, K-12 and higher education, financial institutions and federal, state and local government organizations. According to Vertical Systems Group, Cox Business is the fourth largest provider of business Ethernet services in the U.S. based on customer ports. Cox is currently the seventh largest voice service provider in the U.S. and supports more than 700,000 business phone lines.
