Tandberg Data With New NAS Solution for SMB

Based on Qnap's unit

Tandberg Data added another building block to its data protection portfolio by introducing the DPS2000 NAS Series, a flexible, powerful, affordable family of disk systems created with small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in mind.

When combined with AccuGuard, the company’s new, advanced backup and recovery software featuring source-based deduplication, the DPS2000 NAS (network-attached storage) provides users with automated data protection, including simple cross-platform file sharing, consolidated iSCSI storage, improved backup and recovery capabilities and remote replication for offsite data storage and disaster recovery.

The Tandberg Data DPS2000 NAS allows SMBs to extend their storage and share data on a single, cost-effective platform. The DPS2000 NAS can be configured as a file server and/or an iSCSI target server providing simultaneous file-level access and block-level storage for maximum disk utilization. Each file-level volume can be used for file sharing, disk-to-disk backup and IP video surveillance. As many as eight, unique iSCSI targets can be maintained simultaneously, allowing users to extend local storage for multiple servers without system disruption.

The DPS2000 NAS solution features a user-friendly interface and an easy-to-use Web-based file browser. Integrating seamlessly into existing environments, the DPS2000 NAS ships with a single server version of AccuGuard software, which provides backup and recovery utilizing a powerful source-based data deduplication engine designed to increase effective storage capacities by as much as 20 times.

As technologies like deduplication and replication become more accessible, shared storage simply demands the attention of small businesses everywhere – after all, they have the same requirements for data protection as large enterprises, but complex solutions and hefty price tags have trumped their needs in the past," said Jeff Boles, senior analyst and director of validation services at Taneja Group. "Tandberg Data’s DPS2000 NAS, alongside Tandberg Data’s AccuGuard deduplication software technology, provides a compelling range of functionality – including commercial-grade data protection – but brings with it freedom from the cost and complexity associated with systems built for the enterprise."

Powerful Data Protection
The DPS2000 NAS ensures optimal data preservation and disaster recovery for all business needs in a single compact system. Its block-level remote replication provides offsite storage to another DPS2000 NAS, ensuring high data availability and fast disaster recovery. Its innovative hot-swap design offers full data redundancy, allowing the DPS2000 NAS to operate even when a failed drive is being replaced.  The rackmount configuration also features redundant, hot-swappable power supplies to provide an extra level of data protection and eliminate data downtime in the event of a failure.

The advanced RAID (redundant array of independent disks) configuration of the DPS2000 NAS allows users to increase capacity through physical HDD (hard-disk drive) migration. During the HDD swap, all data residing on the legacy hard drives is seamlessly migrated to the newly installed drives without server downtime. In addition, the virtual appliance stacking feature enables multiple DPS2000 NAS units to be stacked together so that capacity can be scaled up as needed.

DPS2000 NAS Features

  • Simultaneous file sharing and iSCSI disk storage on the same device
  • Cross-platform sharing for Windows, Macintosh and Linux/Unix
  • Storage consolidation across multiple servers onto a single DPS2000 NAS
  • AccuGuard server software with source-based data deduplication
  • Physical HDD migration and virtual appliance stacking
  • Volume encryption and advanced RAID options for data security
  • Block-level remote replication for offsite data protection and disaster recovery
  • Smart power-management features and redundant power supplies
  • Hot-swap HDDs and power supplies
  • One-year of onsite hardware service to assure up time

Configurations
The DPS2000 NAS comes in a desktop configuration with 4TB or a 1U rackmount configuration with either 4TB or 8TB.

AccuGuard Software
Tandberg Data AccuGuard is a Windows-based backup and recovery software designed for SMBs. It is an easy-to-deploy, ‘set-it-and-forget-it’ solution that protects physical and virtual Windows servers. Automatic backup plans ensure data is backed-up coherently from a specific point in time.

AccuGuard utilizes a powerful data deduplication engine designed to increase users’ effective storage capacities by as much as 20 times. Backup verification ensures that every file is saved correctly and without corruption and that stores are searchable down to the version level for quick file discovery.

Source-Based Deduplication
Tandberg Data’s AccuGuard software increases effective backup storage capacity and decreases the backup windows leading to hard dollar savings. Using source-based deduplication – deduplication of data by identifying and removing redundant data prior to storage – optimizes bandwidths, allowing daily backups to run as much as 20 times more efficiently. This makes AccuGuard an ideal solution for high-traffic LAN backup and disaster recovery. Increased backup storage capacity allows many more full backups to remain online for the most reliable data recovery practice.

Availability

Tandberg Data DPS2000 NAS solution will be available in March 2010 through Tandberg Data’s established worldwide channel of distributor and reseller partners. It will ship together with AccuGuard, a Windows-based backup and recovery software. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the DPS2000 NAS Series with AccuGuard starts at $2,290 for 4TB. Where available, the DPS2000 NAS includes one year of onsite hardware service.

Comments

Tandberg is not a novice in NAS, having previously announced products like StorageCab 6000 and more recently Viking FS-1610U. This time the company has chosen partner Qnap Systems, Inc., one of several excellent Taiwanese NAS manufacturers, to offer this DPS2000 but with software focused on backup and DR -adding de-dupe -, not like the Qnap TS 459 Pro Turbo NAS that offers so many functionalities (web server, multimedia, surveillance, etc) that it's difficult to know what is the real use of the engine.

Susan Merriman, global corporate marketing manager of Tandberg Data, revealed that her company will continue to pursue RDX with new models from 640GB to 1TB, as well as HDD subsystems with a coming hard disk drive platform designed and manufactured by the company, now headquartered in Dortmund, Germany. We have also heard about a DPS3000 model coming next April.
