Tandberg Data Now Has De-Dupe Software

Written by dataStor

Tandberg Data announced AccuGuard, its new backup and recovery software with deduplication. Combining AccuGuard with Tandberg Data DPS2000 Series NAS (network-attached storage) and RDX QuikStor removable disk platforms provides SMB users with efficient backup and recovery of their business data, whether it is stored on laptops, workstations or servers.

Tandberg Data AccuGuard is a Windows-based backup and recovery software designed specifically for small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs). It is an easy-to-deploy, ‘set-it-and-forget-it’ solution that protects physical and virtual Windows servers. Automatic backup plans ensure data is backed-up coherently from a specific point in time.

AccuGuard utilizes a powerful data deduplication engine designed to increase users’ effective storage capacities by as much as 20 times.  Backup verification ensures that every file is saved correctly and without corruption and that stores are searchable down to the version level for quick file discovery.

"Small and medium businesses increasingly require and benefit from end-to-end data protection solutions,” says Robert Amatruda, Research Director, Data-Protection and Recovery at IDC. "Tandberg Data’s AccuGuard offers customers improved data protection functionality via automated backup and rapid restore with key features such as deduplication, encryption, and backup verification.”

Source-Based Deduplication
Tandberg Data’s AccuGuard software increases effective backup storage capacity and decreases the backup windows leading to hard dollar savings. Using source-based deduplication – deduplication of data by identifying and removing redundant data prior to storage – optimizes bandwidth, allowing daily backups to run as much as 20 times more efficiently. This makes AccuGuard an ideal solution for high-traffic LAN backup and disaster recovery. Increased backup storage capacity allows many more full backups to remain online for the most reliable data recovery practice.

Tandberg Data RDX QuikStor
The Tandberg Data RDX QuikStor cartridge-based removable disk storage system offers rugged, reliable and convenient storage for backup, archive, data interchange and disaster recovery. It provides SMBs with enterprise-class performance and fast access, with transfer rates as fast as 162GB per hour and is available with as much as 640GB per cartridge. Full backward and forward compatibility allows users to scale to higher capacities, meaning that tomorrow´s higher capacity RDX cartridges will operate in today´s RDX systems. The RDX QuikStor meets the reliability, performance and business requirements for all backup and data archive applications from professional workstations through to the low-end enterprise. Combined with AccuGuard software, the RDX QuikStor drastically improves backup windows and optimizes and increases storage capacity, providing a complete backup of all system and application data.

Tandberg Data DPS2000

Tandberg Data’s DPS2000 NAS is a new, flexible and powerful disk storage system, providing businesses with extended storage and data sharing on a single cost-effective platform. The DPS2000 NAS can be configured as a file server or an iSCSI target server providing simultaneous file-level access and block-level storage for maximum disk utilization. File-level volumes can be used for file sharing, D2D backup and IP video surveillance. The advanced RAID configuration of the DPS2000 NAS allows users to increase capacity through physical HDD migration. In addition, the virtual appliance stacking feature enables multiple DPS2000 units to be stacked together for increased capacity and volumes. The DPS2000 ships with a single server version of AccuGuard, and provides backup and recovery utilizing a powerful data deduplication engine designed to increase effective storage capacities by as much as 20 times.

Availability
Tandberg Data AccuGuard will be available in March 2010 through Tandberg Data’s established worldwide channel of distributor and reseller partners. It will ship together with the DPS2000 NAS Series and RDX QuikStor removable disk systems. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the RDX QuikStor with AccuGuard starts at $169 (drive only), with cartridge prices ranging from $126 for 80GB, to $413 for the 640GB. The DPS2000 NAS Series with AccuGuard starts at $2,290 for 4TB.

Comments

Specialist of backup solutions, Tandberg needed desperately a de-duplication offering. AccuGuard, its new 80MB software to de-dupe data on RDX QuikStor and new DPS2000 NAS, is comparable to EMC Avamar offering. The data are de-duped at the source, the PCs, before being sent to the disk devices. The operation used some processing on the users's computer but there is an advantage as they are less data to transfer.

This software has been written by dataStor, the trade name of Data Storage Group, Inc., a start-up headquartered in Longmont, CO and founded in 2005 by two former Veritas' people, Brian Dodd, president and CEO, and Mike Moore, executive VP and CTO.

Both dataStor and Tandberg announce de-dupe ratio up to 20:1.

dataStor was also at the origin of the de-dupe software used by Quantum for its removable disk drives GoVault, much less successful than RDX.
