Fujitsu Integrates De-Dupe Into Eternus CS Appliances
And adds new entry-level Eternus CS800 model.
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on February 2, 2010 at 3:16 pmFujitsu announces data deduplication technology across its range of ETERNUS CS data protection appliances on a global basis. Advanced deduplication provides a simple and affordable solution for organisations with a disk-based backup strategy. A new entry-level ETERNUS CS model, the ETERNUS CS800, targeted at mid-market customers, also joins the line-up.

Data deduplication makes faster disk backup technology affordable. Organisations therefore gain efficiencies within their dynamic infrastructures through shrinking their backup windows by switching to disk backup, a faster mode of data protection than tape, and by enhancing tape backup strategies with selected disk backup for vital data. Deduplication also provides the dual benefits of reducing network bandwidth for remote replication, and cutting the risk of running out of disk space, by making only a single backup copy of data that exists in multiple instances.
Fujitsu’s ETERNUS CS deduplication technology lowers holistic backup costs, because customers can reduce typical disk storage capacity requirements by 90 percent or more, and enjoy savings on removable tape media administration costs.
Backup expert Peter Williams, practice leader in Information Storage Management with Bloor Research, comments: “Virtual Tape Libraries and deduplication (dedupe) form a perfect technology partnership – de-dupe providing a huge disk capacity and network bandwidth boost. So integrating de-dupe was a must for Fujitsu’s ETERNUS CS range and will extend its appeal beyond larger enterprises to the more capacity and price-sensitive mid-market. Thanks to its refreshing replication capabilities and optional tape integration, we believe the ETERNUS CS800 will enjoy a warm reception in the mid-market.”
Advanced deduplication technology
made easy with ETERNUS CS800
Thanks to factory pre-configuration of the ETERNUS CS800 and its certification with all leading backup software solutions, the appliance is an ideal choice for the rapid integration of advanced deduplication in mid-range environments. Deduplication can reduce storage needs by 90 percent or more when backing up virtual environments such as VMware, therefore reducing the size backup volumes for operating systems and application data, and making it practical for backup data to be stored on disk, allowing faster recovery times.
For system administrators looking to implement a reliable data protection infrastructure, the ETERNUS CS800 supports the easy integration of remote offices into consolidated data protection environments. ETERNUS CS800 deduplication can reduce network bandwidth requirements for data replication between sites by a factor of 20 or more, overcoming consolidated backup issues for branch offices – where WAN performance issues may otherwise hinder automated disaster recovery strategies.
The full line-up of Fujitsu ETERNUS CS data protection appliances are compatible with leading tape libraries, and the new ETERNUS CS800 model also supports Symantec’s OpenStorage (OST) API, which provides a single point of management across sites and storage tiers, automating the process of catalog-aware backup replication and offering optional Direct Tape Creation. This is an attractive option for customers with archiving or long-term data retention policies for tape media.
New Disaster Resilience for Mid-Market Customers
Fujitsu is also making competitively-priced disaster resilience capabilities available to mid-market customers – enabling them to set up an intelligent, easy-to-use disaster recovery contingency, even if they do not have a remote data centre or separate data centre fire compartment.
Deduplication for large enterprise environments
across the ETERNUS CS range
Starting immediately, Fujitsu is also offering optional deduplication capabilities for the enterprise-class ETERNUS CS line – both for new models and the hundreds of existing installations worldwide. The ETERNUS CS 1000 – CS5000 data protection appliances provide large enterprises with comprehensive intelligent data protection across heterogeneous infrastructures.
ETERNUS CS already features True Tape Virtualisation to support the widest range of mainframes, open systems, NAS devices and industry-leading backup applications. By aligning tape, disk and advanced deduplication technology into a suitable ILM (Information Lifecycle Management) strategy, customers can flexibly align different SLAs with their data protection policies and also make efficient use of the most cost-effective storage technologies.
Sean Haffey, storage business manager, Fujitsu UK and Ireland says: “Increasingly, mid-market customers are turning to disk backup to benefit from the greater flexibility and ease of management. By offering the new ETERNUS CS800 model with deduplication, Fujitsu provides an affordable solution that is especially attractive to the mid-market. We are also enhancing the ETERNUS CS high-end systems by adding powerful deduplication capabilities to further strengthen the systems’ outstanding data protection capabilities.”
Deduplication for the ETERNUS CS data protection appliance range delivers a further building block in Fujitsu’s comprehensive Efficient Data Protection portfolio for mid-size and large enterprises. This initiative, introduced in October 2009, now encompasses more than 40 products and solutions, enabling customers to create, implement and maintain future-proofed dynamic infrastructures tailored to their data protection needs.
