VKernel Adds NFS Disk I/O Visibility for VMware

To its Capacity Analyzer

VMware administrators can gain visibility into virtual machines running on NFS across their virtual infrastructure. VKernel has added this capability to Capacity Analyzer, which optimizes capacity and maximizes performance for tens of thousands of VMs, so that NFS disk I/O is no longer a mystery. Without this visibility, performance issues on NFS are almost impossible to detect and resolve.

Typically, any insight into NFS disk I/O is a cumbersome process, which involves setting up a monitoring solution to keep track of specific volumes and find opportunities for optimization or to identify performance bottlenecks. Most VMware administrators don’t have the time to do this, or countless other optimization tasks. VKernel eases the monitoring, analysis and implementation of changes to their environments. The addition of NFS disk I/O monitoring to the administrator’s toolbox will, quite simply, free up resources.

NFS disk I/O is not available through vCenter or other VMware management tools and has previously been available only at the per-volume level. Now, administrators are able to receive a high level view in which to monitor their full environment.

This is what VMware can’t tell you about NFS Disk I/O,” said Alex Bakman, VKernel’s CEO, “There is incredible opportunity for the VMware administrator to monitor NFS Disk I/O in their virtual environment and to make changes that allow for more VMs to fit on their existing hardware. This will make admins cheer.”

VKernel also gives administrators a single view in which to monitor disk I/O for SCSI, iSCSI and fibre channel. This consolidated view has been highly requested and is now available for immediate use.
