Start-Up 3X Systems Introduces Private Cloud Backup Appliance for SMBs

With online remote backup for DR

3X Systems announced its line of portable Remote Backup Appliances (RBA) that enable businesses to deploy a private backup cloud that combines the benefits of high speed on-premise backup with the convenience of online remote backup for disaster recovery – without monthly recurring fees.

The 3X RBA enables small and medium businesses (SMB) to perform their initial backup on premise using the local high speed network, then move the device offsite for continuous remote data protection and disaster recovery. Using its patent-pending locator service, the 3X RBA automatically connects to and backs up data from servers, desktops, roaming laptops and remote offices, regardless of the physical location of these endpoints or of the appliance itself. This unique private cloud architecture keeps data safe, private, easy to recover, and continuously in the possession of the organization.

For small and medium businesses, implementing a disaster recovery and business continuity infrastructure remains difficult. Enterprise solutions are too complicated, while cloud backup services are slow and recurring fees can become prohibitive as storage requirements grow,” said Deni Connor, Principal Analyst for Storage Strategies NOW. “3X Systems has developed an innovative approach that blends elements of on-premise, remote, and cloud backup solutions in an affordable appliance. 3X is delivering enterprise capabilities lacking in cloud services, yet doesn’t require dedicated IT resources to manage.”

Total Data Privacy
To overcome the privacy drawbacks of cloud backup services, the 3X RBA stores data on a physical appliance that is owned and controlled by the business. All data on the device is protected by HIPAA Compliant 128-bit AES encryption with digital access keys, hardware signatures, IP filtering, and hierarchical permission levels of administrator authorization. Remote backup sessions are secured using SSL encryption at both ends of broadband connections to prevent data theft.

Total Data Recovery
The 3X RBA is designed to be administered by an IT professional, but also to be used comfortably by non-technical staff who can easily and safely recover their own files from a point-in-time restore via a simple interface. In addition, administrators can push restored files as needed to their original or new locations. The 3X RBA management system also provides detailed reporting and alerting capabilities for audit, troubleshooting, and to prevent data loss.

Total Data Mobility
With the RBA, data can be backed up from anywhere to anywhere using the system’s unique locator service technology which eliminates manual configuration of IP addresses, port numbers, and hostnames. In the event of a disaster or catastrophic data loss, the portable 3X RBA can be moved back onto the network for lightening fast data restore. “Until now, SMBs that wanted to backup data on servers, desktops, and roaming laptops had two less than ideal options. Deploy and try to manage multiple solutions for local and remote backup, or use a limited functionality cloud service with unpredictable and escalating fees,” said Alan Arman, CEO and founder of 3X Systems. “3X Remote Backup Appliances combine the best features of local and remote backup, in an affordable, easy-to-use, and privacy-friendly form factor.

Making Enterprise Capabilities Accessible to SMBs
The 3X RBA offers small and medium businesses advanced features typically associated with enterprise class products, such as deduplication, block level backup, common file elimination and more. Despite these high-end capabilities, the 3X RBA requires little ongoing administration and management after initial setup to provide a ‘set-it-and-forget-it’ deployment experience.

Availability and Pricing
The 3X Remote Backup Appliance is available immediately from 3X Authorized Channel Partners worldwide. 3X RBA capacity ranges from 100GB to up to 2TB of backup space, with a new 6TB model currently in development. Pricing starts at $2,495 and includes an unlimited number of endpoint licenses and a full year of unlimited technical support and software upgrades.

Comments

Based in Columbus, OH, 3X Systems (formerly Boxicom, Inc.) was founded in 2006 by CEO Alan Arman to create an offsite backup solution for SMBs through an appliance. The privately-held company said to have hundreds of customers and employs 16 people.

Several start-ups are engaged in this new trend: an appliance for in-house backup and the cloud for replication.
