QLogic Signs With Dell
To provide FCoE CNAs
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on December 15, 2009 at 3:12 pmQLogic Corp. announced that its 8100 Series converged network adapters (CNAs) are now embedded within a broad range of Dell PowerEdge servers, including the new Intel Xeon 5500 Nehalem-powered PowerEdge R610 and R710 rack servers, T610 and T710 tower servers and the M610 and M710 blade servers.
The energy efficiency of VMware virtualization, Nehalem-based Dell servers and QLogic Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) combines in a highly effective way to address the needs of today’s companies that face scarce power resources.
At a time when many users in populous metropolitan areas such as New York and Tokyo have reached peak capacity and simply cannot get any more power into their buildings, the need to decrease data center power usage is more prevalent than ever. In accordance with this requirement, customers are increasingly deploying VMware, FCoE and Nehalem-based servers with lower power consumption characteristics to slash power costs. The real-world business need to reduce power costs is fundamentally fueling the shift to FCoE with Dell and QLogic positioned at the apex of this market opportunity.
“This design win from Dell caps off an already impressive year for QLogic’s single chip FCoE technology that has included numerous other Tier 1 OEM wins,” stated Bob Laliberte, senior analyst Enterprise Strategy Group. “As organizations look to gracefully migrate to energy efficient converged networks based on 10 Gig Ethernet in 2010, QLogic and its partners like Dell will be well positioned to deliver industry leading solutions.”
“We see Ethernet as the best way to create a single enterprise fabric. QLogic’s CNAs help us offer customers a high-performance, energy-efficient path from legacy Fibre Channel SANs into a next-generation environment built on 10 gigabit Ethernet,” said Larry Hart, senior manager, Dell Networking.
For the same amount of electricity or less, Nehalam-based servers from Dell deliver twice the performance of previous-generation Xeon 5400 processors under peak workloads, and new power management features built into Nehalem reduce power usage by up to 50 percent during system idle.
By implementing Dell servers and QLogic CNAs in VMware environments where energy demands are drastically reduced through server consolidation and the dynamic management of computer assets, data center administrators can keep pace with the increasing demands of enterprise computing workloads while keeping energy costs under control.
“By 2013, we expect 70 percent of IT organizations will have virtualized IO for new deployments of virtualized servers. A critical portion of this will come from what we refer to as VCNAs (virtual converged network adapters),” said David Vellante, chief research advocate, Wikibon.org. “VCNA technology, which is enabled by QLogic’s 8100 Series, will allow single configuration servers to adapt to the workload they are asked to perform, essential in a highly virtualized environment. This will enable better server utilization, less rack cabling and more efficient energy consumption. It will also enable automatic reconfiguration and drive down CAPEX and management costs.”
“Today’s announcement marks the culmination of QLogic’s longstanding history of providing networking solutions for Dell servers and storage,” said Amit Vashi, vice president of marketing, Host Solutions Group, QLogic Corp. “QLogic has become the premier provider of single-chip FCoE converged network adapters for leading OEMs such as Dell by providing first-to-market technology that is unsurpassed in performance and power savings. The combination of energy-efficient Dell servers, QLogic FCoE technology and sophisticated virtualization applications such as VMware forms a synergistic fusion that is optimal for data centers looking to save on energy costs.”
