Savvis Selects Compellent
To virtualize storage for next-generation cloud platform
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on October 23, 2009 at 3:22 pmSavvis, Inc., in outsourced Internet infrastructure services for the enterprise, today announced that it has selected Compellent Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise-class network storage solutions, to provide the virtualized storage platform underpinning Project Spirit, Savvis’ next-generation cloud infrastructure platform.
The recently announced Project Spirit cloud platform is designed to power the industry’s first enterprise-class Virtual Private Data Center with multi-tiered Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities. Project Spirit focuses on complete virtual data center provisioning that extends far beyond the simple application deployment designs available in many cloud service offerings today. Savvis expects to launch the beta version of Project Spirit later this year.
Savvis chose Compellent for its patented automated tiered storage technology, an important component of the multi-tiered QoS capabilities delivered via Savvis’ Project Spirit. Automated tiering significantly increases performance and lowers cost as critical data is reserved for the fastest storage while data that is less performance-sensitive is automatically assigned to slower, less expensive storage. With Compellent, Project Spirit offers robust storage management that is energy efficient and cost effective. Regardless of the storage tier, information in Project Spirit is protected by enterprise storage management technology and practices.
"As a key component of Savvis’ Project Spirit, Compellent will help us drive down the cost of lifecycle storage while preserving application performance for our customers’ mission-critical applications," said Bryan Doerr, Savvis CTO. "Compellent’s open industry architecture enables Savvis to easily incorporate new storage technologies that allow us to stay on the leading edge of performance and cost reduction as storage advancements evolve over time."
"Savvis is rapidly emerging as a leader in cloud infrastructure solutions for the enterprise," said Phil Soran, chief executive officer, Compellent. "End-users embracing a cloud strategy should look for technology products and services that provide efficiency, simplicity and security through end-to-end virtualization. We are pleased to provide the key enabling storage platform for Savvis’ next generation cloud solutions and look forward to participating as their beta customers come online later this year."
Cloud infrastructure is a style of application infrastructure in which dynamically scalable resources are provided as a service. Project Spirit takes cloud computing in new directions by offering multiple grades of service. Compellent’s storage platform enables Savvis to extend Spirit’s service grade concept into storage functions by offering customers clear choices of performance, cost, and data protection.
Savvis operates 28 data centers globally encompassing more than 1.4 million square feet of raised floor space designed to support enterprise IT operations.
