Olocity Launches StorageIM Professional Edition Based on SMI-S
A platform for managing heterogeneous systems in the IT infrastructure
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on October 21, 2009 at 3:15 pmOlocity Corporation announced at Storage Networking World Fall 2009, the release of StorageIM Professional Edition, the first and only open platform for managing heterogeneous systems in the IT infrastructure.
Utilizing the open core business model and emerging industry standards such as the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S), developed through the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), Olocity created StorageIM to serve as the nucleus of storage management technology for IT consumers and storage vendors.
“Enterprise storage is slow to evolve,” said Jack Burness, president of Burness and Associates. “That’s why agile companies like Olocity are best equipped to provide storage management solutions that quickly adapt to emerging technologies like solid state and cloud.”
Building upon the StorageIM Community Edition – available as a free download with full discovery, monitoring and basic management capabilities – StorageIM Professional Edition takes the product line to the next level by including:
- Datacenter performance metrics
- Expanded systems management capabilities
- Customized training and support
Kurt Krems, president and CEO of Olocity, said: “Using storage standards and open source together creates a powerful tool for datacenter managers. StorageIM has been vetted by some of the brightest minds in the industry through continual development, broad testing and code reviews, allowing us to minimize the cost of development. We also eliminate most of the sales activity associated with enterprise software by offering the Community Edition as a free download, with an optional upgrade to the Professional Edition.”
However, Krems stressed that cost should not be the only variable to consider when evaluating open source alternatives. “As the software industry evolves and more applications move to the cloud, Gartner and other sources predict that most next-generation, cloud-based software infrastructure providers and software-as-a-service (SAAS) solutions will be based on open source. Now is clearly the time to get onboard,” he said.
Using OlocityxIM architecture as its core, StorageIM provides scalable solutions that help avoid vendor lock-in, decrease the time-to-market, leverage robust open source software, lower the total cost of ownership and gain a competitive advantage.
As an IT productivity tool, StorageIM manages arrays, virtualizers, switches, HBAs and tape libraries across product lines with a high degree of interoperability.
StorageIM supports
many commercially available products, including:
- arrays from 3PAR, EMC, LSI Logic, Fujitsu, HDS, IBM, HP, Pillar and Data Direct Networks;
- switches from Brocade, Cisco, and QLogic;
- HBAs from Emulex and QLogic; and
- tape libraries from HP, IBM, and Quantum.
It also supports Linux hosts via SBLIM infrastructures and runs on both Linux and Windows operating systems.
