Solid Data Shipping 3rd Generation of DRAM-Based Enterprise Storage Solution

"DRAM is superior to flash", said the company.

Solid Data Systems, Inc. announced that its third generation, enterprise-class solid-state storage system, StorageSPIRE, is shipping in production volumes.

Solid Data has continuously enhanced its solid-state storage solutions to provide ever greater performance, features, and functionality, as well as high reliability for deployment in mission-critical infrastructure. To date, Solid Data’s systems are the only 5-9s certified and NEBS-compliant solid-state storage systems in the industry.

"There is a market perception that only NAND Flash is solid-state storage and that DRAM is too expensive and too volatile," said Steve Topper, CEO of Solid Data. "With our third generation StorageSPIRE we achieve several goals – we continue to demonstrate (i) that DRAM is superior to Flash in terms of far lower latency and much higher throughput; (ii) that DRAM does not require the wear-leveling and garbage collection workarounds to hide deficiencies in the memory itself; (iii) investment protection as the DRAM never wears out; and (iv) the narrowing of the price gap between DRAM and Flash, while delivering greater than 10x performance gains vs. Flash."

Solid Data has solved the DRAM volatility issue by properly architecting a completely persistent, non-volatile, fully redundant, data protected, low latency, and high performance solid-state storage system worthy of enterprise and datacenter requirements.

"Deployments across Financial Services, Telco, Manufacturing, Insurance, and Retail global enterprises, as well as Federal and Defense agencies continue to validate that our solutions are bulletproof," added Topper.

Solid Data just recently began production shipments of their latest generation SAN-attached StorageSPIRE and continues to see increasing customer demand for their reliable solid-state storage solutions. Follow-on product development plans are in full swing, with system refreshes rolling out over the next several quarters, as StorageSPIRE is positioned as the enterprise platform of choice in solid-state storage. Solid Data’s ground-breaking, patented architecture harnesses proven DRAM advantages to deliver best-in-class application performance and best overall ROI compared to short-stroked disk drives and Flash drive upgrades.

"The market is being told that Flash drives are the way to go as they are cheaper and can best deliver enterprise-class performance and reliability. This simply is not true," Topper continued. "While Flash is somewhat less expensive than DRAM, they cannot beat us on latency and performance, and large numbers of customers have told us that the endurance of these products simply is not there. In many cases, these drives wear out after only days of use. If you look at the internals of the leading Flash drive vendor, this is why 20-30% of the component capacity is DRAM fronting the Flash – for performance, and to keep as much data in DRAM before it has to write the data out to the Flash."

The StorageSPIRE offers up to 1TB with FC interface in a 42U rack of 590kg (!). Announced throughput is 96Gb/s.
