Sepaton De-Dupe Software Contains Costs in Virtual Backup Environments

According to openBench Labs testing

SEPATON, Inc. announced that openBench Labs has confirmed that the SEPATON S2100-ES2 Series 1000 with DeltaScale scale-out architecture and DeltaStor deduplication software provides an approach for enterprise backup and recovery that is highly effective in reducing capacity and containing costs in virtual operating environments (VOEs).

A recently published openBench Labs report details the benefits offered by SEPATON’s enterprise-class virtual tape library (VTL) and DeltaStor deduplication software as a solution that can control the costs and risks associated with exponential data growth, maintain existing backup operations without disruption, and significantly lengthen on-line data retention times to address the need for faster and easier data recovery.

The report illustrates the results of openBench Labs’ testing of the SEPATON solution and confirms significant improvements in data protection, including greater storage capacity, quantifiable savings in storage resources, reduced management complexity, more efficient and faster backups, and technology transparency.

openBench Labs performed hands-on testing of the S2100-ES2 enterprise VTL with DeltaStor software using Symantec NetBackup to backup application data with VMware Consolidated Backup software residing on a Fibre Channel attached disk array being shared by eight VMware ESX and vCenter servers running Windows Server 2003.

Highlights of the testing included:

  • With a minimal configuration, the SEPATON VTL immediately provided backup throughput of 650MB per second and maintained that performance throughout backup, deduplication and capacity reclamation processes.
  • In performance tests of both backup and restore jobs of VM image sets, throughput of the SEPATON VTL with DeltaStor software ranged from two to ten times faster than other competing data deduplication technologies tested by openBench Labs.

SEPATON’s DeltaStor deduplication software incorporates a powerful forward referencing technology that uses the most recent backup as the baseline for comparison,” said Jack Fegreus, managing director, openBench Labs. “As a result, DeltaStor can restore the most recent backups with little or no reassembly. This strategy provides outstanding performance and near linear scalability in backup and restore operations. What’s more, using a forward pointing deduplication scheme, DeltaStor continually evaluates all stored backup jobs. It is that continuous deduplication scheme that ensures optimal utilization of deduplication resources. It compares data first at the object level to find potentially duplicate data. It then examines this subset of data at the byte level for maximum efficiency.

Virtual server technology enables system administrators to focus their attention on a consolidated, centrally managed environment,” said Fidelma Russo, executive vice president of engineering and development, SEPATON, Inc. “However, backing up virtual machines with traditional tape technology can be a challenge. A high-performing VTL like a SEPATON S2100 can eliminate the challenges that traditional backup technologies bring to virtualized data centers to improve resource utilization, reduce costs, and provider greater management flexibility.
