Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Chooses Storwize
To reduce storage costs associated with CAD and image application data
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on August 17, 2009 at 1:21 pmStorwize, Inc. announced that Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co, Ltd has chosen the company’s capacity optimization solution to significantly reduce storage and operational costs associated with their CAD and image application data.
Storwize solutions are deployed at hundreds of customer locations worldwide enabling organizations to achieve significant and immediate ROI by dramatically reducing their cost of storage and associated infrastructure footprint, power, cooling, and administrative costs.
Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd., a leading construction company, formed by the merger of Mitsui Construction and Sumitomo Construction, needed a solution to control escalating storage costs driven by the rapid growth of CAD and image data from their numerous construction sites. After consolidating more than a dozen disparate file servers to a consolidated NAS infrastructure, they realized their capacity growth requirements were beyond their expectations.
“We expected to use our existing NAS for three years, but 70% of disks were filled in one year,” said Hideo Kimishima, general manager of the IT Solutions department. Sumitomo Mitsui experimented with ILM solutions, a method to move old data to secondary storage, but we were not satisfied with the results. “The ILM system was too expensive and it was too difficult to move data automatically without users’ cooperation,” said Mikinori Senba, assistant-section chief of the IT Solution department.
Sumitomo chose the Storwize STN-6000 capacity optimization solution which created immediate savings. The cost of the Storwize solution was about half the cost of purchasing additional capacity and eliminated the need for additional rack space in the data center. They also achieved operational and performance benefits. “We determined that the STN-6000 is more effective in operational costs and we also found that the load on storage was decreased by using the Storwize solution,” said Mr. Senba.
“Sumitomo Mitsui’s selection of Storwize is a great testament to how our solutions are a better alternative than the traditional model of throwing more storage at the problem or trying to use complicated data management solutions,” said Peter Smails, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Storwize. “For half the price of buying additional storage Sumitomo Mitsui dramatically increased its existing capacity, eliminated the need to add more racks to their data center, and improved operational efficiency. We’re proud to have Sumitomo Mitsui as one of our valued customers.”
