Quantum DXi7500 De-Dupe Solution Qualified With Symantec
For OpenStorage direct-to-tape capability
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on July 14, 2009 at 3:03 pmQuantum Corp. announced that its DXi7500 disk backup and remote replication solution is the first deduplication system to be qualified by Symantec for its OpenStorage API direct tape creation capability to support the new release of NetBackup 6.5.4. Building on Quantum’s support for OpenStorage remote replication, which enables users to move data backed up to disk efficiently between sites, OpenStorage direct tape creation adds the ability to create copies on tape, all in a fully automated process managed and tracked by NetBackup.
Recently released in Symantec NetBackup 6.5.4 software, the OpenStorage direct-to-tape functionality coordinates with Quantum’s DXi-Series disk backup systems to automate the migration of data across disk and tape tiers, eliminating data movement through the media server when storing to tape, while maintaining a single point of management and catalog with NetBackup. By providing separate expiration policies for different data sets, NetBackup allows users to keep recent backups on disk for quick restores. Older backup sets can be stored on tape for compliance and long-term retention at the lowest cost. The close integration between NetBackup and DXi-Series disk systems automates operations to reduce costs and provide maximum control.
The new direct-to-tape functionality leverages existing support for remote replication under OpenStorage that utilizes Quantum’s deduplication technology to dramatically reduce disk and bandwidth requirements. Together, the replication and tape support give users an end-to-end backup capability spanning multiple sites and storage technologies.
"The combination of NetBackup’s OpenStorage interface and Quantum’s DXi-Series provides an industry-first capability," said Janae Lee, senior vice president of marketing at Quantum. "Our DXi system has evolved from a standalone appliance, becoming fully integrated to provide local high-speed backup and restore, automated disaster recovery protection across sites, long-term retention at low cost, and encryption for full security — all under central management to reduce costs and boost overall effectiveness."
"Today’s IT organizations have very complex backup environments as they leverage multiple copies of data on disk and tape to deal with the differing recovery requirements within the global enterprise," said Matt Kixmoeller, vice president of product management, Symantec Information Management Group. "Symantec OpenStorage API simplifies the management of those environments, and we worked closely with Quantum to deliver an integrated approach that combines hardware and software under a single management umbrella with NetBackup."
In January 2009, Quantum announced enhanced DXi7500 software integration with OpenStorage, providing customers with an automated replication process that increases control and visibility of data across multiple locations, improving storage utilization and reducing management overhead. In June 2009, Quantum announced that it had bundled OpenStorage support into its cost-effective DXi2500-D, a new deduplication and replication appliance specifically designed for distributed environments.
The Quantum DXi7500 with OpenStorage support is available today through Quantum and its channel partners.
