The SimpleSave name might sound familiar, since it’s part of the same family that introduced SimpleSave Photo last year. The software is developed by HP, while Western Digital designed the hardware.
The external hard drive is aptly named, since it really is simple. You just plug the drive into a USB port, and it quickly begins to back up your data. The drive automatically scans the hard drives of your computer and backs up your files. It supports hundreds of file formats, including your picture, music, and word, documents, as well as PDFs. If you leave the drive plugged in, it will back up your files every five minutes that your computer is idle.
The line of portable drives includes a 320GB and a 500GB drive for $120 and $150, respectively. The larger, less portable units include a 1TB and a 2TB desktop drive for $150 and $330, respectively. You can expect to see the SimpleSave drives at Staples stores by mid-July, and other retail stores after that.
