Two Storage Start-Ups in Stealth Mode: Avere and EvoStor

Few things we learned about them

Here is what we learn about two storage start-ups, up to now unknown.

In stealth mode, Avere Systems, Inc. was created in 2008 in Pittsburgh, PA, apparently to launch an “Advanced Storage Solutions”, a “line of business in manufacturing computer storage devices”. That’s all we know concerning its activity. But Avere seems a serious project as its president and CEO is the famous Ron Bianchini, former president and CEO of Spinnaker Network, sold to NetApp where he was one of the VPs. The team also includes CTO Michael Kazar, also coming from Spinnaker Networks and NetApp, who filed several storage patents. We also learned that he donated $400 to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign…

We got a little more on what is preparing EvoStor, Inc., born in 2007 and based in Los Gatos, CA. It is apparently working on software for archiving and data base migration, competing with companies like Outerbay (acquired by HP for more than $10 million in 2006), Princeton Softech (acquired by IBM in 2007) and Applimation (acquired this year by Informatica), according to sources. The company lands $5 million in series A round at the end of 2008 from Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Starfish Ventures and the Southern Cross Group. Founder and chairman who was also CEO of the start-up until March 2009 is Bret Cox, who was GM of the storage and software division of Silicon Graphics from 2003 to 2007. Current CEO is George Symons, that works for Qualix, Legato, EMC (CTO for information management), before being CEO of Yosemite (acquired par Baraccuda Networks). He is also board member of 4blox, in iSCSI SAN management.
