NASA Ames Selects Spectra Logic

NASA Ames, a Silicon Valley-based research center of NASA, recently installed two Spectra Logic‘s T950 tape libraries with LTO-4 drives and media, which together offer approximately 20,000 data storage slots and up to 32 petabytes of storage capacity, with data compression. By replacing multiple, outdated Sun/STK 9310 silos with Spectra Logic technology, NASA Ames has freed more than 1400 square feet of valuable data center floor space.

After an extensive nine-month evaluation period, NASA selected Spectra Logic Federal to address its high performance computing (HPC) enterprise archive needs. Ten Sun/STK silos were replaced by two T950 units which include new library management features and functionality for NASA.

“We selected Spectra Logic Federal based on support, features (lifecycle management of media, assisted self maintenance, encryption, media warranty), density, and shortest time to production,” said Alan Powers, HPC Technical Director, CSC.” In addition, Spectra’s ability to quickly incorporate specific enhancements that were important to NASA high-end computing operations also played a significant deciding factor.”
