Arkeia Gets VTL and De-Dupe

With FalconStor

Arkeia Software and FalconStor Software, Inc. announced a broad sales, marketing and technology partnership to deliver fast and flexible backup and restores of deduplicated data sets across deployment modes. The foundation of the partnership is the completion of rigorous testing and validation between FalconStor Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Virtual Appliance and Arkeia Network Backup v8 backup software, ensuring seamless operation between the enterprise-class deduplication and backup solutions as virtual appliances.

"Leveraging FalconStor VTL Virtual Appliance’s ability for fast backup, data deduplication, and enterprise-wide replication with the robustness of Arkeia Network Backup gives users a powerful backup and restore solution," said Bernie Wu, FalconStor vice president of business development. "Users can deploy both solutions as virtual appliances in their existing virtual environment, giving them the ability to protect their entire IT infrastructure, including both virtualized and physical servers.

With Arkeia’s three deployment modes – as a software application, a physical appliance, or as a virtual appliance – customers benefit by having the flexibility to deploy the solution that makes most sense for their infrastructure,” said Frédéric Renard, vice president, marketing, Arkeia Software. “By partnering with FalconStore VTL and deduplication, customers eliminate data redundancies and reduce storage capacity requirements.

Best of Both Worlds – Physical and Virtual Deployments
While Arkeia and FalconStor have demonstrated that the two products run together on a single virtualized server platform, other configurations are possible where Arkeia Network Backup is deployed as application software, as a physical appliance, or in a distinct virtual machine. In any of these configurations, Arkeia can backup any combination of 130 distinct platforms, including other server virtualization platforms.

While certified with FalconStor deduplication on the block level, Arkeia Network Backup can also be used in conjunction with the FalconStor File-interface Deduplication System (FDS), a block-level deduplication solution that presents a network share interface as a backup repository. Customers can choose a file interface or a VTL interface or both for data deduplication, depending on data center requirements.

FalconStor FDS, which accepts data from standard network backup software (including Arkeia Network Backup) and database backup utilities, helps customers reduce physical storage requirements, improves backup performance and shortens recovery times. FalconStor FDS is optimized for third-party backup software such as Arkeia. Many-to-one replication capability is included for global deduplication from multiple sources. Arkeia Network Backup embeds its own optimized disk-based virtual tape library (VTL), but can also store backup files in any third-party VTL that respects iSCSI, SAS, SCSI, or Fibre Channel standards. Arkeia Network Backup also offers backup data replication across LANs and WANs, permitting customers to protect data without the expense and inconvenience of moving physical media.

Comments

Both FalconStor (with Continuous Data Protector) and Arkeia (Network Backup) have their own backup products, but Arkeia needed urgently a VTL with de-dupe, a technology that the French company finally got with this new partnership. Furthermore, Arkeia is not yet in CDP, but FalconStor is...
