EMC Integrates With VMware vSphere 4

For next-generation virtualized data centers

EMC Corporation announced that its broad portfolio of industry-leading networked storage, data protection, IT management and security products have been tested and integrated with VMware vSphere 4, the industry’s first operating system for building the internal cloud, and the virtual data center. EMC products, solutions and services help customers store, protect, and add intelligence to their information while virtualizing and automating their traditional IT environments today and laying the foundation for next-generation virtualized data centers.

"EMC shares with VMware a common vision for the future of computing, the result of which will completely transform the way customers purchase and deploy IT resources," said Frank Hauck, EMC’s executive vice president, global marketing, alliances and customer quality. "To speed their path to the unprecedented levels of choice, control and flexibility presented by virtual data center and private cloud implementations, EMC, in close collaboration with VMware, invested early and aggressively to ensure its broad information infrastructure portfolio works in complete harmony with VMware vSphere 4 deployments on day one."

"VMware vSphere 4 is designed to tie the diverse cloud computing components together into a single managed entity that delivers a true operating system for building the internal cloud," said Tod Nielsen, chief operating officer, VMware. "EMC products and solutions complement VMware vSphere 4 to enable improved efficiency and increased scalability for customers as they continue their journey toward cloud computing."

Networked Storage
Customers of all sizes, from the smallest SMB to the largest enterprise, can extend, enhance and accelerate VMware vSphere 4 deployments through the complementary features of EMC’s industry-leading networked storage systems that have been tested and tightly integrated in EMC E-Lab with VMware vSphere 4. They can achieve greater efficiency through utilizing data deduplication, Enterprise Flash Drives, low-power SATA, and spin-down, and greater integrated control through VMware vCenter-integrated array snapshots, VMware vCenter-integrated management, Virtual LUNs, UltraFlex I/O modules, Virtual Storage and Storage Quality of Service. This delivers dynamic storage where every attribute can be non-disruptively changed. In addition, customers can take advantage of the choice and flexibility EMC provides around protocols including iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS and Fibre Chanel over Ethernet, and systems that can scale for every application, and every use case with EMC Celerra and EMC CLARiiON and the world’s largest high-end storage system, EMC Symmetrix V-Max, for the biggest private clouds and virtual workloads. Also today, EMC announced EMC PowerPath/VE path management software – delivering extensive integration with VMware vStorage technology, with significant levels of performance, automation and simplicity for VMware vSphere 4 environments.

Data Protection
With a new paradigm of virtual infrastructures, customers need to cost effectively protect file, application, virtual machine and site levels. EMC Avamar backup and data deduplication software delivers file level protection optimized for VMware vSphere 4 to enable customers to consolidate workloads by reducing network and storage burdens by more than 90 percent. Virtual machines and applications are protected through EMC array-based snapshots that enable restoring an entire virtual server within minutes. In addition, EMC’s wide array of industry-leading replication products – including EMC RecoverPoint – can be leveraged with VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager for automated recovery of an entire virtual infrastructure in the event of a failure or outage, and provide unique VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager failback. When combined with EMC NetWorker, customers can manage their entire virtual backup infrastructure through a holistic, single-pane console for more effective backups, thus receiving more effective backups, shortened backup windows and increased consolidation ratio by more than 50 percent.

IT Management
EMC’s Resource Management solutions help customers automate visibility and control across the virtualized IT infrastructure. Whether a customer is beginning their journey or accelerating towards a fully virtualized data center, EMC’s IT management software is an extensible investment in vSphere support. EMC’s management tools support VMware vSphere 4 and leverage VMware vCenter and VMware ESX and VMware ESXi APIs. Specific products set to support VMware vSphere 4 include: EMC ControlCenter and EMC StorageScope for storage resource management, extending the capabilities in the new VMware vCenter Storage Maps and Reports; EMC Server Configuration Manager, extending the capabilities of the new VMware vSphere 4 Host Profiles for best practices control and compliance; EMC Application Discovery Manager to automatically discover and map interdependencies for applications and their components inclusive of physical and virtual relationships; EMC Smarts for fully automated root-cause analysis for virtualized data centers; and the EMC Infra service management solution, offering a fully federated CMDB with ITIL process templates and automated workflows. EMCs Resource Management solutions enable VMware customers to gain even more efficiency and effectiveness through automating IT management visibility and control.

Security
RSA, The Security Division of EMC, is integrated with VMware vCenter and VMware View authentication today, and is collaborating with VMware to build the next generation of information-centric virtualization security solutions designed to help organizations not only extend virtualization into environments containing sensitive data, but also leverage virtual technologies to increase security beyond what is possible in today’s physical environments. An information-centric approach to security is not only preferable in the virtual infrastructure; it is enabled by VMware vSphere 4 and the VMware VMSafe security APIs.
