To ensure the highest levels of customer service, Rooms To Go is using CommVault Simpana 8 global embedded block level deduplication to more efficiently and cost effectively expedite access to critical inventory and customer information.
As America’s No. 1 independent furniture company with the nation’s largest furniture inventory, Rooms To Go is experiencing rapid data growth in support of its business goals to deliver more than 4,000 furnished rooms a day to homes in 32 states. A seven-person team maintains a highly efficient IT infrastructure that supports 5,000 employees, through custom Unix point-of-sale and inventory management databases, along with Microsoft Windows Server , Exchange and SQL applications as well as its VMware infrastructure.
CommVault Simpana 8’s end-to-end deduplication, used in combination with low-cost SATA drives, has enabled Rooms To Go to protect terabytes of mission-critical backup data on approximately one-third of the capacity otherwise required. According to the company, Rooms To Go has reduced the volume of data that needs to be transferred for data protection and data management tasks by 60 percent, increasing operational efficiencies, lowering primary storage costs and ensuring immediate access to crucial business data by retaining one week of backups on nearline storage.
Simpana 8: First Dedupe-to-Tape Solution
Lowers Recurring Costs
By using the CommVault Simpana dedupe feature, Rooms To Go can now greatly reduce the costs of storing and transferring data. By reducing the amount of data under management, across all its storage tiers, from primary storage through to tape, Rooms To Go claims it is slashing its tape media and long-term vaulting costs nearly in half.
The company’s ability to lower recurring costs across both disk and tape storage reinforces a top business objective to maximize a restricted IT budget and limited resources during a tightened economy. Software-based deduplication boosts efficiency and flexibility with multiple media agents, and enables Rooms To Go to make storage-agnostic purchase decisions and avoid hardware vendor lock-in and the premium costs of appliance-based dedupe. CommVault’s end-to-end deduplication capabilities are gaining traction as companies of all sizes increasingly seek more economical solutions that don’t require the addition of costly, hard-to-manage hardware appliances.
CommVault’s Unified Data Management Drives Efficiencies
CommVault’s holistic data management approach enables a small team to easily manage huge amounts of application data for backups, restores, archives, deduplication and disaster recovery across the entire organization. With Simpana software’s centralized management console, Rooms To Go claims it has reduced overall administration time by more than 75 percent, allowing the IT team to focus on more pressing tasks in support of business priorities.
CommVault was first deployed four years ago to replace a failing CA ARCserve platform, and according to Rooms To Go, delivered better price/performance than IBM TSM, Symantec Veritas NetBackup and EMC Legato Networker.
According to Jason Hall, Director of IT Systems, Rooms To Go: "While nearly 40 percent of our data contains redundant information, we couldn’t justify the acquisition or recurring costs of buying a hardware-based dedupe appliance. With Simpana software’s global, embedded software capabilities, we finally were able to get into the dedupe game and benefit from all the storage cost reductions without having to buy expensive hardware. Being able to extend deduplication all the way to tape is a pretty compelling value proposition and CommVault is the only company we know that is addressing this requirement. CommVault has included a lot of new features in the Simpana 8 release that will help us drive operational efficiencies, which is a bottom-line business priority. As far as we’re concerned, no one else is there yet with product scope and capabilities’and Simpana 8 software is the most competitively priced enterprise-class solution on the market. We run a pretty lean IT department, so we really appreciate the layout and design of CommVault’s management console, which makes it easy to manage all the different aspects of our data management infrastructure."
