Soho-based NMR provides services and solutions to post-production houses, graphics and animation houses and creative agencies. Its customers, involved in the creation and delivery of digital film and video content, rely on NMR for the installation, integration and support of their digital video, audio and streaming media applications.

Neil Anderson, business director at NMR, said: “With the digital film and video industry migrating to more data intensive high definition formats, most studios are now using Apple’s Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Server for content creation and management. We selected Atempo’s digital archive and backup solutions because they protect and preserve valuable content throughout all stages of post-production and integrate well with Apple’s market leading applications.”

Atempo Digital Archive can detect newly imported or ingested raw footage and automatically preserve it on the archive device, while still leaving the files in place for editors to use. The automation criteria is configurable based on policies specific to the user’s workflow, including file location, creation date, and file name or type. Then, as editors work on their projects, Atempo Time Navigator can back up data such as Final Cut Pro project files and render files. With this protection in place, it is easy to recover from a disk crash or an accidentally deleted project file and, with an easy-to-use interface, users can restore files themselves.

Although Final Cut Server is used heavily in the digital film and video content industry, when it came to archiving digital content users were traditionally restricted to a limited choice of disk-based devices. However, NMR found that Atempo Digital Archive offered extensive support of many tape and disk-based platforms, allowing users to archive to a much wider, and often more affordable, range of storage platforms.

Anderson added: “ADA lets our customers move content from production storage to near-line and deep archival storage, both disk and tape, of their choice. This lets users maximise their storage capacity, especially for high definition workflows, while preserving content for later re-use.”

The flexibility of Atempo Digital Archive was an additional benefit for NMR customers. First, the archive can scale to hundreds of terabytes. Second, NMR’s internal test team was impressed with the drag-and-drop interface designed for self-service archive and retrieval. Third, the ability to automatically migrate files based on custom policies also helped streamline what was previously a time-consuming process.

With ADA our customers can quickly and easily retrieve and restore any volume of archived films or other valuable digital assets as and when they want to,” said Anderson.

Matthias Hintenaus, managing director northern and central Europe at Atempo, said: “The digital film and video content industry has a very specific set of data protection and archiving needs that spans the moment data enters the workflow until decades after the finished work is archived for long-term preservation. By partnering with specialist resellers like NMR our customers are assured that their valuable data is fully protected, efficiently archived and immediately available from beginning to end.”
