New HP EVA 6400/8400
With enhanced virtualization, SSDs and RAID-6
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on March 11, 2009 at 3:42 pmThe news EVA from HP provides designed-in virtualization to support your most critical applications as well as your bulk storage needs.
HP StorageWorks 6400/8400 Enterprise Virtual Array automatically improves performance by placing data across more disk drives with tiered storage and tightly integrates replication when using highly visible software applications. The ease of management using HP StorageWorks Command View Software results in less time spent on maintenance and administrative intervention. Higher capacity utilization provides improved performance and manageable storage in a more consolidated environmental footprint.
The EVA6400/8400 allows you to virtualize everything and seamlessly provision your storage when growing your applications. Add virtual servers and EVAs to dynamically build a complete virtualized IT environment—virtual storage for virtual servers tuned for your environment.
What’s new:
- Increased cache up to 22 GB for improved application read and write performance
- Vraid 6 for greater data protection and more cost effective than mirroring
- Increased maximum LUN size to 32 TB to support application requirements
- Solid State Disk support for high I/O/low-latency applications
- Support for 64 snapshots for improved data management and back-up
Features & Benefits
- Automatically adaptable performance: Adapts to improve performance by placing data across more spindles and automatically re-leveling when new storage is added. EVA solutions tightly integrate local and remote replication with highly visible software applications. EVA offers tiered storage for the most effective use of storage dollars.
- Easy management with HP Command View EVA Software: Allows IT to focus on innovation by reducing the amount of management resources needed to support, provision and maintain your storage environment when compared to traditional storage. Expanding and shrinking data files is as easy as a few mouse clicks resulting in less administrative intervention.
- Drive storage utilization to unprecedented levels: There is no need to pre-allocate dedicated storage capacity due to the high management burden imposed by a traditional storage architecture. The easy management of the EVA allows you to add disks when you want or use Dynamic Capacity Management Software to grow or shrink capacity when needed.
- Integrated local and remote replication: EVA offers Business Copy EVA and Continuous Access EVA Software for local and remote replication needs. The EVA solution improves data availability and business agility and supports business continuance and disaster tolerant environments for your key business applications.
The best array for virtualized IT environments
- Change ready storage for change ready servers: The EVA allows you to seamlessly provision storage while growing your applications by adding virtual servers and EVAs dynamically.
- No stranded performance: EVA virtualization allows you to use the power and speed of all your drives by spreading data across all the disks in the storage array.
- No stranded capacity: Remove the guesswork from your purchasing decisions. No need to purchase disks that would be allocated but not in use. The flexibility of EVA virtualization allows you to grow or shrink your storage dynamically as your business needs change. EVA uses all the drives for the highest disk utilization.
Total solutions for your environment
- Extensive hardware and software offerings: HP offers total solutions for your datacenter, including servers, EVAs, array integrated software, services and support for iSCSI, file and print, backup with Virtual Library System (VLS), data migration with SAN Virtualization Services Platform (SVSP).
- Robust integration: Integration of applications and operating systems with tested and proven solutions brings simplicity to your complex and changing environment.
- Configure an entire datacenter in a single rack: HP Factory Express can configure your entire order (SAN/POS/servers/backup) in a rack, and securely load your data prior to shipment saving time and money by providing a fully configured greener solution.
Comments
Being the fifth generation of mid-range EVA since 2002, the 6400 and 8400 are available at list prices
starting at $24,240 and $61,456 in U.S. (€39,214 and €58,308 in Europe), respectively.
HP said to have sold a total of 60,000 EVAs, half of them in Europe and intends to ship more systems in the next two years than in the preceding fours ones.
Like EMC, HDS, IBM and Sun, HP is using SSDs from STEC.
The 72GB silicon disk is around three times more expansive than a 150GB 15K HDD. HP said that, with these SSDs, you get 78,000 IO/s in random read on an EVA 8000, or 29% more with 8 SSDs compared to 324 HDDs.
SVSP 2.1, also
available now, costs $37,180 (€25,200 in Europe).
This SAN Virtualization Services Platform is OEMed from LSI that got the product following its acquisition of StoreAge Networking Technologies for $50 million in 2006.
