Bus-Tech Combines Quantum DXi7500 D2D Backup With Its Mainframe Data Library

To add de-dupe

Bus-Tech, Inc., provider of virtual tape solutions for mainframe environments, announced the interoperability of its Mainframe Data Library (MDL) with Quantum’s DXi7500 disk-based backup and replication system. The combined solution offers the ability to take advantage of Quantum’s flexible policy-based deduplication technology and provide data centers with a single backup vehicle for both mainframe and open system server environments.

Data center managers are now able to combine open system and mainframe servers into a single, unified backup process where the two had historically remained separate. Doing so simplifies data backup for the enterprise and reduces the overall cost associated with data protection.

“The qualification of Bus-Tech’s MDL and Quantum’s DXi7500 provides enterprise customers a single backup strategy including data deduplication for both mainframe and open system server needs, thereby improving overall data management and operations efficiency in the data center,” stated Bus-Tech President, Al Brandt.

Interoperability was confirmed based on testing at Bus-Tech’s laboratory in Burlington, Massachusetts. As part of the certification process, the MDL was tested with Quantum’s DXi7500 in dual FICON and ESCON configurations and connected to the DXi7500 via NFS. Bus-Tech is currently in the process of certifying interoperability via a direct interface to the DXi7500’s VTL engine. The combined solution underwent stress and functionality tests to help ensure users can perform normal tape processing without any changes to their existing applications or JCL. The MDL in combination with the Quantum DXi7500 provides a cost effective solution for using disk for mainframe and open system backup and recovery.

We are extending the benefits of deduplication to both mainframe and open environments, thus reducing disk backup requirements by 90% or more and enabling remote replication of backup data over wide area networks,” said Jim Jonez, senior director of disk product and program management at Quantum. “With the combination of Bus-Tech’s MDL and Quantum’s DXi-Series disk, data centers in a mixed mainframe and open systems environment can now utilize a common data repository and storage management solution.
