“Energy Savings of $2.9 Million for 3par Customers Worldwide”

According to a TechValidate survey of the vendor's customers

3PAR announced that 95% of the respondents to a recent TechValidate survey of 3PAR customers recommended using 3PAR Utility Storage as a strategic component of any Green IT initiative.

3PAR has helped numerous customers meet Green IT objectives while reducing their capital and operating costs through shrinking physical capacity requirements, power consumption, and carbon footprint by as much as 80% — amounting to a total annualized energy savings of US $2.9 million for 3PAR customers worldwide. These reductions have translated into cost savings that offer some financial relief during challenging economic times and which have been validated by third-party agencies such as PG&E and Wikibon Energy Lab. These results have also won awards for 3PAR Utility Storage from Storage Networking World, the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), and are the reason that 3PAR won TechForum‘s 2008 Award for Best Practices in Storage Management. 3PAR also announced today a new savings calculator designed to help customers easily calculate energy and cost savings associated with replacing aging traditional storage with green storage from 3PAR.

A storage efficiency pioneer since 2002, 3PAR has continued to develop green technologies that combine built-in virtualization and industry-leading performance with innovative hardware and software design to lower costs and make storage more efficient. With hyper-efficient 3PAR arrays, customers have not only cut capacity purchases, but have also cut energy costs, SAN costs, and floor space requirements. Among 3PAR’s cloud service provider customers surveyed through TechValidate, 69% said they have saved more than 40% in total capacity purchases by using 3PAR instead of traditional storage to power their service delivery infrastructures.

California State University, East Bay combined storage virtualization from 3PAR with server virtualization from VMware to reduce storage capacity requirements by 80% and power consumption by 26%, even after adding 21 new applications. These savings qualified the University to participate in the 3PAR Virtual Technology Incentive Program (V-TIP) and to receive financial incentives from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). The power savings achieved by Cal State, East Bay were independently validated by Wikibon Energy Lab, a service provided by wikibon.org, which determined that 3PAR Thin Provisioning software reduced SAN energy consumption by up to 75% and that replacing aging storage with next-gen storage from 3PAR cut energy costs.

3PAR extends the energy-saving capabilities of its storage arrays by also investing in carbon-reducing green programs such as the 3PAR Carbon Neutral Storage Initiative, first introduced in January 2007. 3PAR customers enrolled in this program from 2007-2008 enjoyed an annualized energy savings amounting to nearly 24 million kilowatt-hours and US $2.9 million. This innovative program — the first of its kind in the industry — effectively delivers 100% carbon-neutral storage by funding the purchase of carbon credits equivalent to one metric ton of CO2 for each terabyte of 3PAR Utility Storage sold with 3PAR Thin Provisioning. When combined with the nearly 14,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions averted by choosing to deploy hyper-efficient 3PAR Utility Storage arrays over traditional storage, the total CO2 savings realized by this program have added up to a reduction of more than 25,000 tons of carbon-dioxide gas — the equivalent of eliminating the consumption of 58,140 barrels of oil. Carbon credits are purchased through TerraPass (www.terrapass.com), the leading retailer of greenhouse gas reduction programs in the US.

"3PAR is leading a revolution in storage design that translates into more efficient storage, fewer spinning disks, and lower power and cooling requirements," said Dave Vellante, Co-founder and Principal Contributor of Wikibon. "Our Energy Lab analysis confirms that companies like 3PAR are debunking the myth that Green IT initiatives are inherently costly. On the contrary, in these challenging economic times, energy efficiency is getting a boost from organizations that need to do more with less."

"Green storage is the foundation of the smart datacenter," said David Scott, 3PAR President and CEO. "3PAR’s leadership in this space is a reflection of the results achieved by our customers, who have found that a hyper-efficient, green storage foundation is the key to unlocking savings on the valuable capital, human, physical, and environmental resources that go into running today’s datacenters — in some cases, by up to 90%."
