NetXen With iSCSI Boot Solution
For its NIC adapters
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on February 16, 2009 at 3:41 pmNetXen, Inc., in 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE)
adapter card port shipments, announced availability of iSCSI Boot
support for its family of dual-port 10GbE and quad-port 1GbE
Intelligent NIC adapters, enabling low cost SANs on ubiquitous Ethernet
networks.
Supporting iSCSI remote boot on the NetXen NIC eliminates the need for
a separate host bus adapter, making networked storage more cost
effective. In addition, the solution enables blade servers to go
diskless, which saves power and increases system reliability.
iSCSI has emerged as an important networked storage technology,
especially in the small and medium-sized business (SMB) segment. Using
iSCSI boot, the operating system is initialized from a remote iSCSI
storage area network (SAN), removing the need for large locally
attached hard disk drives and local OS images. This reduces total cost
of ownership by contributing to lower power consumption, better
solution performance and real estate cost savings.
iSCSI technology is one of the major building blocks for providing a
standard Ethernet-based infrastructure for data, storage and networking
traffic. "By adding iSCSI remote boot to our solution, we’re giving
customers the functionality they need to more broadly deploy iSCSI
storage across SMB and large enterprise," said Vikram Karvat, vice
president of marketing and product development at NetXen. "This release
is another demonstration of our ongoing commitment to augment the
functionality of our Intelligent NIC products to bring key technology
advances to customers."
The iSCSI boot support will be offered as part of NetXen’s new
third-generation Intelligent NIC products including the NX3-20GCU and
NX3-20GXR dual-port 10GbE PCIe 2.0 adapters, and the NX3-4GBT quad-port
Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
