Index Engines Adds Content Awareness to Tape Discovery

With the ability to filter by file type and content

Index Engines announced the ability to filter by file type and content prior to automatically indexing data stored on backup tapes. This new feature allows litigation support professionals to sort and cull out irrelevant files types, such as system files and executables early in the collection process. Index Engines has increased the efficiency of tape discovery, saving time and money during litigation.

"Our experience has shown us that on average less than 5% of data stored on backup tape is valuable," said Jim McGann, VP of Marketing for Index Engines. "At Index Engines we continue to work with our customers to bring ever more efficiency to the tape discovery process. By allowing faster access to this relevant percentage of information, we ensure that those critical nuggets of stored data can be retrieved in the fastest, most cost-effective manner."

Index Engines Tape Engine is the only solution available that can automatically catalog, index and extract data directly from tape with out the backup software. The Tape Engine now offers the ability to either include only the desired files types, or exclude irrelevant data formats, from the automated tape indexing process. Prior to indexing, the Tape Engines allows users to specify results including only certain file types; email, documents, etc…, and then automatically builds the index from the tape data accordingly. The appliance builds the specified index based on true content awareness, not by simple sorting of file extensions, to ensure that this filtering process is forensically sound. Traditional file listing methods are inaccurate if file extensions have changed by altering or truncating file names. With content awareness, Index Engines delivers all the data matching the user’s criteria based on content and format, not extensions that are subject to manipulation.

The Tape Engines’ unmatched capabilities limit the time and cost associated with tape discovery efforts that have historically needed to restore large amounts of unwanted data to access case specific information. The new content awareness feature allows users to find what they need even faster than before.
