SSDs and Digital Video Cameras Fastest NAND Flash Applications

According to In-Stat

NAND flash revenue in two key applications, Solid State Drives (SSDs) and Video Capture from Digital Video Cameras (DVCs), will see compound annual growth rates (CAGR) of over 100% through 2012, reports market specialist In-Stat. This will overcome some of the weaknesses in other segments of the NAND flash market and drive overall growth to 30% CAGR.

"The top four applications for NAND flash will remain MP3 players and PMPs, mobile handsets, after-market cards, and USB Flash Drives, with a combined market share of over 80 percent over the next couple of years," says Jim McGregor, In-Stat analyst. "This percentage will drop to about 70 percent by 2012, as solid state drives (SSDs) and video capture from digital video cameras (DVCs) grow in importance."

Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

  • Among the NAND flash market share leaders, including Samsung, Toshiba and Hynix, all lost market share in 2007. Smaller share competitors, Micron and Intel, each gained share.
  • Worldwide NAND flash revenues are likely to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29.7 percent from 2007-2012 to reach $61 billion.
  • Worldwide NOR flash revenues will increase at a 6 percent CAGR from 2007 through 2012.

The research, Flash Applications Drive Strong Revenues Worldwide (#IN0804117SI), covers the worldwide market for flash memory. It provides a deep look into both NOR and NAND flash markets with a particular emphasis on NAND, the larger of the two. Both NAND and NOR forecasts and regional trends are supplemented by a history of NAND pricing and supplier process migrations, and a market-by-market analysis of each of NAND flash’s largest end applications. It includes forecasts through 2012 for:

  • Flash revenue
  • Flash revenue by region
  • Flash revenue by category
  • Products containing flash memory

Price of the report: $2,995 (US).
